Annual Teaching Conference Draws Washington Students

Students from across Washington state met on the Central Washington University campus for the seventh annual conference designed to recruit talented students into the teaching profession.

Students attending from the Spokane area and their high schools were:

Nichole Decker and Laura Shearer, both of Central Valley; Mike Hall and Yang Vang, both of Lewis and Clark; and Arlette Montufar and Tonya Pfeifer, both of North Central.

Trish Rockwell, a fifth-grade teacher at Sunrise Elementary in Greenacres served as a teacher adviser, and Central Valley seniors Erica Hendrickson and Kelly Schwahn served as resident advisers.

Several Inland Northwest college and university students were named to the dean’s list at their schools. The students, their hometowns and schools are:

Magdalena Merrill, Kettle Falls, Wash., Bates College, Lewiston, Maine.

Tara Wigen, LaCrosse, Wash.; Michael Dodson, Spangle; and Gina Naccarato, Nichola Speranzi, George Phaneuf, Amy Curtis, Deborah Cox and Beverly Rose, all of Spokane, Eastern Washington University.

Robyn Reed, Spokane, Macalester College, St. Paul, Minn.

The YWCA of Spokane has been awarded $35,000 for its Encore Plus program by the YWCA of the U.S.A. Fund for Women’s Health. The program provides education and referral to screening for early detection of breast and cervical cancer and an exercise and support class for women after breast cancer surgery.

The following students are recent graduates of Yakima Valley Community College: Brandon Schmitten, East Wenatchee; Laurelyn Mathers, Nine Mile Falls; Veronica Skelton, Omak, Wash.; Kelly Butterfield, Shelly Buckholz, Patricia Huston, Jessica Farmer, Dale Forrest, Robert Garza and Michael McDaniels, all of Spokane; and Kathryn Applegarth, Wenatchee.

Three Moses Lake residents were honored for volunteering more than 400 hours each to the Adam East Museum and Art Center in Moses Lake. Jim McKeen, logged 1,413 hours; Ramon Cerna, 553 hours; and Carol Black, 402 hours.

Dr. Allen Broderson, a physician of internal medicine at the Spokane Veterans Affairs Medical Center, was recently elected a fellow of the American College of Physicians, the professional organization of internists.

Kristin Goff of Wendle Ford-Nissan-Isuzu graduated from the Dealer Candidate Academy of the National Automobile Dealers Association. She is a graduate of the University of Idaho.

Rial Moulton has been appointed to the national board of governors by the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys. He will be one of nine from around the country to serve as an adviser to the director of the 110-member organization.

Cristine Cashatt, Spokane, had an item published in the August edition of Sunset Magazine on Priest Lake, Idaho, being the “most wonderful place to cool off during the hot inland summer.”

Natalia Swenson and Allison Bryan, juniors at LaCrosse (Wash.) High School, earned gold medals for their presentation on goal setting at the 50th-annual Future Homemakers of America National Competition in Washington, D.C.
