WSU Saddles Host Cowboys With Loss

Sarah Silvernail had a career-high 11 blocks Saturday and added 16 kills and 11 digs to lead 19th-ranked Washington State (6-0) to a 15-6, 15-4, 16-18, 15-9 volleyball win over the host Cowboys (4-2) at the Wyoming Tournament in Laramie.

Elis Arias added 15 kills and 16 digs and setter Stephanie Papke had a career-high 53 assists for WSU.

Boise State (5-3) defeated the host Bulldogs 15-9, 10-15, 15-8, 15-9, then dropped Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo 19-17, 15-7, 12-15, 15-13 to win the fourth annual Spikeoff Spokane at Gonzaga University.

BSU’s Jill Fleming was named tournament MVP after she had 38 kills, 22 digs and 19 blocks.

Wendy Wilson of GU (1-7) had 42 kills and made the all-tourney team.

Juli Carlson had eight kills and five digs for Eastern Washington (1-4) as it beat Sam Houston State 15-8, 15-7, 15-11 at the Fresno State Tournament. Kim Exner had 20 kills in two matches as EWU finished 4th.

Tzvetelina Yanchulova had 54 kills, 25 digs and five blocks on the day as Idaho (6-2) split two matches at the Portland Invitational.

Lewis-Clark State beat Carroll College 15-7, 15-13 in the championship match of the 14-team Whitworth Invitational.The all-tournament team included L-C State’s Kelli Harris and Tiffany Hepfauf and Tara Basilewitsch of Carroll.

Football

Mike Hofheins caught 10 passes for 218 yards, including a pair of second-half touchdowns, as Whitworth’s alumni defeated the current Pirates 20-19.

Women’s soccer

A second-half goal by midfielder Erin Martinez lifted 11th-ranked Santa Clara (2-0-1) over 17th-ranked Washington State 1-0 in a nonconference match at Pullman.

The Cougars (1-1-1) are 0-3 lifetime against the Broncos.

Jen Tissue scored twice and Joy Cullen had a goal and an assist as Whitworth (1-4) topped Puget Sound 3-1 at Simon Fraser’s tournament in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Cross country

Montana’s men and WSU’s women won titles at Idaho’s invitational.

Whitman’s Jessica Bissonette won the women’s 5,000 meters in 18 minutes, 48.9 seconds. George Loucaides won the men’s 4-miler in 20:44.8 and led WSU to second place.

Golf

Mark Gardner of The Creek at Qualchan and Chris Mitchell of Sun Dance shot 2-under-par 70s to tie for eighth after one round of the Pozzi Windows Pro-Am at Bend, Ore.
