New Rules Anger Logging Firms

From Staff And Wire Reports

Northwest logging companies cried foul Monday over new federal safety regulations for loggers.

The rules shift much of the responsibility for wearing protective gear from the logger to the employer.

Effective immediately, all logging companies will have to provide hard hats, face masks and gloves to those who cut timber.

In addition, loggers themselves will have to buy boots capable of protecting their feet from a running chain saw. Such boots, made of the same kind of nylonmesh Kevlar material used in police body armor, generally are regarded as less comfortable to wear, particularly in hot weather.

One company spokesman said the government “went back on its word” in imposing the new rules after assuring industry leaders compromises would be made.
