Dollar Hits Nine-Month High Vs. Yen
The dollar surged to a nine-month high, rising above 101 Japanese yen Tuesday, as major Japanese institutions dumped yen and hopes faded for a recovery soon from Japan’s long-term economic weakness.
But that surge failed to broadly lift the greenback, with the dollar turning in a mixed performance against other major currencies.
The dollar rose to 100.85 yen in late European trading and then to 101.18 during U.S. trading, a level not seen since January 9, when it was at 101.30 and headed lower. The dollar now has recovered by almost 27 percent from the post-World War II low of 79.75 yen, reached during trading April 19 in Tokyo.
