Sheraton Workers Get Layoff Notices

From Staff And Wire Reports

More than 300 employees at the Spokane Sheraton received layoff notices Tuesday, the first step in the hotel’s transition to a Red Lion.

The notices were not much of a surprise to employees, who have known for months that the 369-room hotel’s owners plan to switch affiliation from Sheraton to Red Lion.

The deal to switch affiliation has been in the works since the beginning of this year, but has been delayed several times.

Sheraton owners Riverfront Associates Limited Partnership and general partner U.S. Development Co. in Seattle are finalizing the deal with Vancouver, Wash.-based Red Lion Inns.

The layoff notices are standard practice in this kind of change, said Beryl Ash, president of U.S. Development.

Red Lion spokesperson Kerri Culbertson in Vancouver would not comment on whether current Sheraton employees would be retained by Red Lion.
