Nagy Shuts Out Yankees To Halt Streak
American League
Charles Nagy pitched a three-hitter for his first shutout in three years and Albert Belle hit his 37th home run Wednesday night as the Cleveland Indians stopped the New York Yankees’ six-game winning streak 5-0.
Shortstop Omar Vizquel drove in three runs and was brilliant defensively for the Indians, who avoided a three-game sweep. They split the season series with the Yankees 6-6.
Nagy (14-5) won his fourth straight start, walking two and striking out five in his second complete game of the year and his first shutout since he pitched a one-hitter at Baltimore on Aug. 8, 1992.

Detroit
Lou Whitaker’s three-run homer in the ninth inning lifted Detroit to a win over Milwaukee, extending the Tigers’ winning streak to five games.
Whitaker and Alan Trammell played in their 1,915th game, breaking the A.L. record of 1,914 held by George Brett and Frank White of the Kansas City Royals.

Ivan Rodriguez hit an RBI single in the 11th inning as Texas beat Toronto for its fourth straight victory.
Will Clark led off the 11th with a single against Mike Timlin (4-3) and took third on a single to center by Juan Gonzalez.
White Sox 6, Angels 1
Anaheim, Calif.
Frank Thomas became the fifth major leaguer to drive in 100 runs in each of his first five full seasons, hitting two homers as Chicago beat California.
Thomas hit his 36th home run in the ninth, one behind A.L. leaders Albert Belle and Mo Vaughn, giving him 101 RBIs.

Oakland, Calif.
Mark McGwire hit his 30th homer and Danny Tartabull homered for the first time since his trade to Oakland in late July as the Athletics defeated Kansas City.
McGwire’s homer was his 268th, tying him with Reggie Jackson for first place on the Oakland career list.

Baltimore
Tim Wakefield allowed two hits in 8-1/3 innings and rookie Dwayne Hosey hit his first major-league homer as Boston ended its five-game losing streak by beating Baltimore.
Hosey went 4 for 5 with two doubles and scored both Boston runs.
La Russa may leave A’s
Oakland Athletics manager Tony La Russa could be on his way to managing another club next season.
The major-league owners are expected to approve the sale of the Oakland franchise from the Walter Haas family to Bay Area investors Steve Schott and Ken Hofmann today in a meeting at the Westin Hotel in Detroit.
La Russa’s contract runs through 1997, but it contains a clause that allows him to leave after any season if the Haas family sells the club.
Clearing the bases
Epy Guerrero, the man most responsible for Toronto’s large Dominican and Latin influence, resigned as the team’s coordinator of Latin American scouting and player development… . Baltimore Owner Peter Angelos, already deciding that general manager Roland Hemond will be dismissed after the season, has asked for permission to interview Cleveland’s Dan O’Dowd and San Diego’s Randy Smith.
