There’s Nothing To Rival Newest Breed Of Booster
Now we’ve heard of cross-dressing. But what’s this about cross-boostering?
The easiest way to answer that question is with a question: What do you get when you cross a Coeur d’Alene Viking booster with a Lake City Timberwolf booster?
According to Jerry Brouillette, a board member of the CdA/LC booster club, you get a “TimberVik.”
That’s a booster who wholeheartedly supports both schools.
He’s neither a Viking nor a Timberwolf. He’s one and the same.
For the fun of it, here’s our suggested name for Brouillette and his cross-boosters: T-Vik.
It’d make a great bumper sticker. Print them up and sell them at all athletic events. Donate the proceeds to a local charity or put the money back into the athletes through the booster club.
Just a thought.
It’s my fault
Lakeland High head football coach Terry Kiefer has never been as transparent or quotable as he’s been this season - and the season is just two games old.
When asked about his team’s mistakes Friday following the Hawks’ 20-13 loss to Sandpoint, Kiefer was refreshingly frank.
“Somebody asked me (in preseason) what my biggest concern was and I said coaching. I wasn’t just saying it in a facetious way. When you have as many new kids as we have starting, it’s just hard to cover everything you need to cover. Every time a kid makes a mistake on the field, you have to look back at yourself.
“I’m not down on the kids a bit. We made all kinds of improvement from last week and we’ll make some more improvement this week and be ready for league.”
Where’s the gold lining
Even when things couldn’t seem to get worse, they do. Just ask the Lake City High football team.
The Timberwolves were physically outmatched against Cheney last week, and the result was a rash of injuries, bumps and bruises.
The most serious of injuries involved starting running back Travis Whiteside and Brian Ross.
Whiteside has been lost for the season with two broken bones above his shoulder and Ross will miss 10 days to two weeks with strained ligaments in an ankle.
The unfortunate reality is this: Though the T-Wolves are much improved over last year, it hasn’t made and won’t make a difference this season.
There’s not a team remaining on LC’s schedule that the T-Wolves will be favored to beat. After playing host to East Valley on Friday, LC goes to Moses Lake, Wash., and will face a team picked to finish seventh in its conference (which is high for typical Moses Lake teams). After that LC takes on Sandpoint, Lewiston, Post Falls, Lakeland and Coeur d’Alene.
The record through two seasons could be 0-18.
Head coach Van Troxel never promised overnight miracles. But 1996 may not get here soon enough for his liking.
Injury report
Coeur d’Alene junior linebacker/fullback Mark Scates’ injured shoulder has now been diagnosed as a second-degree separation in his left shoulder. Apparently he can’t damage it any more than he has and will have surgery at the end of the season.
Scates could have surgery now but has opted to play in pain because he doesn’t want to sit out the season.
Lewiston quarterback Jeremy Frei sat out the Bengals’ 28-0 win over West Valley because of strained ligaments in an ankle.
Frei is expected to sit out this week, but could be back next week.
On your mark
The first of two major area cross country invitationals will be held Friday afternoon. The Sandpoint Invitational, held at picturesque Hidden Lakes Country Club (5 miles northeast of Sandpoint), will begin at 3.
It’s a tuneup for the Farragut Invitational, which will be held Sept. 23 at Farragut State Park near Bayview.
Close, but …
Lake City volleyball coach Kent Scanlon thought Tuesday would be the breakthrough match against St. Maries.
Going into LC’s match at St. Maries, Scanlon teams (he coached nine years at CdA) were 0-21 against Mitch Santos’ Lumberjacks. Make it 0-22 as the T-Wolves put up a respectable fight before falling 15-10, 7-15, 15-11.
Santos praised the T-Wolves. “On the net, it’s the best team he (Scanlon) has ever had. Right now, it’s just a matter of getting their defense a little shored up.”
And that might not be enough for LC to challenge Sandpoint, which is playing far and away better than it did during its run for the State A-1 title last year.
