Cabinet Offers Safe Display For All Those Fragile Collectibles
Here’s an ideal project for do-it-yourselfers who want to show off their finest crystal, glassware, china and other collectibles.
This curio cabinet safely displays delicate items on height-adjustable, tempered-glass shelves behind elegant glass doors. The clear shelves, along with an interior fluorescent light fixture, allow light to shine all the way through the cabinet, brilliantly illuminating its contents. The cabinet pictured here was built from oak and oak plywood, but different woods can be used. In all, the project requires 14 board feet of oak, one 4-by-8 sheet of plywood, four pieces of oak molding and eight glass panels. Shelf supports, hinges, magnetic latches, door knobs, nails and glue are also needed, and a lock can be installed for extra security.
This project is easy enough for most do-it-yourselfers, calling only for straight cuts and straightforward, step-by-step assembly. When completed, the curio cabinet measures 72 inches tall by 35 inches long by 15 inches deep.
The Curio Cabinet plan, No. 709, is $6.50 and includes step-by-step instructions with 10 photos, full-size patterns, exploded assembly and cutting diagrams and a complete shopping list and cutting schedule.
A plan for a smaller curio cabinet, No. 771, is also $6.50. It measures 32 inches tall by 33 inches long by 14 inches deep. In addition, a catalog picturing hundreds of do-it-yourself projects for indoors and out is available for $3.95. Prices include sales tax, postage and handling.
