Kedall Takes Lead

Skip Kedall birdied four of his last six holes to shoot a 5-under-par 66 and join Steve Lowery as first-round leaders of the $1 million B.C. Open.

Fourteen others were at 3-under, including Faxon’s Ryder Cup teammates Fred Couples and Jay Haas. Davis Love III, another Ryder Cup player, and British Open champ John Daly were among 17 who were three strokes back.

Pullman’s Kirk Triplett had five birdies in his first six holes and temporarily led the pack. However, Triplett self-destructed on the way to the clubhouse with consecutive bogeys on Nos. 15-17. He finished with a 69.

Mitzi Edge, who grew up 3 miles from famed Augusta National and has yet to win in 11 years on the LPGA tour, shot a 5-under-par 67 to take the first-round lead at the $500,000 Safeco Classic at Kent, Wash. The University of Georgia graduate birdied five of her last seven holes, including one with a 30-foot putt.

Rathdrum, Idaho’s Tracy Hanson shot a 1-over 73. Robin Walton of Clarkston, Wash., had a 75.

At St. Paul, Minn., Jean Smith of Boise slipped to a 77 but maintained a two-stroke lead after the second round of the 34th USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship.
