S-R’S Contest Brings Best In Home Design To Your Doorstep

Until today, it was almost impossible to get a good look at the vacation home Seattle architect Charles Anderson designed for his parents on a hillside near Hope, Idaho. You needed either an invitation or a helicopter.

But by winning The Spokesman-Review’s 1995 Inland Northwest Home Awards contest, the home can be shared with 250,000 newspaper readers.

The Anderson residence, along with more than a dozen other projects, will be featured in The Spokesman-Review during the next few weeks. We’ll examine some of the best large and small new homes built during the past three years, plus look at a thoroughly remodeled kitchen and the ongoing restoration of a historic Browne’s Addition mansion.

This year’s contest attracted 56 entries - 43 of which arrived hours (and, in some cases, minutes) before the deadline. Among the projects entered were everything from Victorian reproductions and log lodges to flat-roofed contemporary homes. Frank Lloyd Wright and Charles and Henry Greene would recognize their influence in several of the designs.

Most of the entries were sophisticated portfolios running upward to 46 pages. The least elaborate was nothing more than an envelope of snapshots, a simple floor plan and a seven-sentence description. That one, by the way, was submitted by Charles Anderson.

Listed below are the winners of our second Inland Northwest Home Awards contest. Each will receive a plaque or certificate of recognition. To all 56 who participated, thanks for sharing your homes.
