Sheehan Takes Lead

Patty Sheehan, who says this will be her last tournament this year, shot a 7-under-par 65 and set a tournament record for 36 holes in taking a four-shot lead in the $500,000 Safeco Classic at Kent, Wash.

Sheehan’s two-day total of 133 broke her own record of 134, set in 1990 on the 6,234-yard Meridian Valley Country Club course.

Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum, Idaho, shot a 72 to put her total at 145 while Clarkston’s Robin Walton failed to qualify for round three as she shot a 73 to put her total at 148.

Jean Smith, 54 of Boise, Idaho, shot her second straight 4-over-par 77 for a one-stroke victory in the 34th USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at St. Paul, Minn with a 9-over 228 total.

Jay Williamson bogeyed his final hole after hitting his drive into the water, settling for a 68 that dropped him back into a five-way tie for the lead at 135 midway through the $1 million B.C. Open at Endicott, N.Y.

Pullman’s Kirk Triplett made an eagle on the par-5 third hole and added birdies on Nos. 5 and 6 to move to 9-under, but for the second straight day he collapsed on the way into the clubhouse. He is tied with nine other golfers at 136. He shot a 67 in round two.

Ray Floyd shot a 7-under-par 65 to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Brickyard Crossing Championship at Indianapolis.

Tim Simpson, a four-time winner on the PGA Tour, shot a 9-under-par 63 on to take a two-stroke lead after the first round of the Nike Tri-Cities Open at Richland, Wash.
