Three Share Pro-Am Lead At 67

Pros Ron Barker and Chris Mitchell and amateur Bob Christensen were in a three-way tie for first after shooting 5-under-par 67s in the final regular Washington Trust Bank Pro-Am of the year at Coeur d’Alene Golf Club on Monday.

Barker, the head pro at Ritzville, shot a 34-33 while Mitchell, the head pro at Sun Dance, and Christensen, playing out of The Coeur d’Alene Resort, shot 33-34s to share low honors.

Eleven of the 55 professionals and five of the 219 amateurs in the field beat the par of 72.

George Winn, the head pro at Harrington Golf Club, shot a 34-36-70 to beat out Sun Dance’s Ken Johnston (37-36-73) in the senior professional division.

In the net amateur ranks, Tim McElhinny of Painted Hills shot 70-5 for a 65 to win the 0-8 handicap division; Ron King of Coeur d’Alene Golf Club was 78-13 for a 65 to lead the 9-13 brigade; and Bill Berry of Hidden Lakes had an 87-24 for a 63 to lead in 14 and up.

The team competition was won by the Downriver group led by Dan Porter at 114. His partners were Shelton Wade, Jerry Hendren, Ed Ranninger and Bill Burke. Painted Hills, Bryden Canyon and Coeur d’Alene Golf Club groups shared second at 117.

Next week’s finale is a pro-seniors event at Hayden Lake with shotgun starts at 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Hamilton returns to Chiefs

The Hartford Whalers have sent defenseman Hugh Hamilton back to the Spokane Chiefs.

The Anaheim Mighty Ducks assigned left wing Maxim Bets and right wing Craig Reichert, both former Chiefs, to Baltimore of the American Hockey League.

Montana search narrows

In Missoula, the University of Montana has narrowed its search for a new athletic director to four men and hopes to choose one within a month.

The new A.D. will replace Bill Moos, who resigned in June to become athletic director at the University of Oregon after five years at Montana.

The finalists, announced by UM during the weekend, are Chris Gage, athletic director at Division II Eastern New Mexico; David Martin, interim athletic director at Division I Oklahoma State; Wayne Hogan, associate A.D. at Division I Florida State; and Kenneth Winstead, associate A.D. at Division I University of Houston.

The finalists are expected on the Missoula campus during the next three weeks for interviews with the 15-member selection committee.

GSL soccer

Megan Cummings, Sharma Shields, Becca Reach and Angie Schmidt each scored as Ferris defeated North Central 4-0 in a Greater Spokane League match at the North Complex.

Kami McGowan had 19 saves for the Indians, who faced 37 shots on goal from the Saxons.

North Central had just two shots on goal.

College soccer

At Bellevue, Adrian Reyes had a goal and two assists as the Community Colleges of Spokane tied Bellevue Community College 3-3.

Sasquatch (1-1-1) goalie R.J. Merritt recorded 10 saves, but gave up three consecutive goals in the second half to let Bellevue back into the match.
