Oregon State Clips WSU On Goal Off A Corner Kick

Oregon State sophomore Val Williams scored an unconventional goal off a corner kick to lead the 15th-ranked Beavers past Washington State 1-0 at Pullman Tuesday in the Pacific-10 Conference soccer opener for both teams.

The Cougars (1-4-1) lost their fourth straight match, while the Beavers (6-1-0) are off to their best start.

Williams took a kick from the left corner and hooked a perfect ball just past the near post. WSU goalkeeper Jessica Glazer was shielded when an OSU attacker and the Cougars’ Tari Beck moved ahead of her in the box. Both players missed the ball, which ricocheted off Glazer’s hands into the goal less than 9 minutes into the match.

Idaho substitute Jessica Moore added 12 kills.

Wendy Wilson had 11 kills and Nicola Lamoure 33 assists for the Bulldogs (2-11).

Idaho begins Big Sky Conference play on Friday against visiting Idaho State.

Jill Fleming of Boise State was named Big Sky Conference player of the week after leading the Broncos (9-3) to the title in their Holiday Inn Classic.

Fleming, a 6-foot senior middle blocker from Reardan, averaged 2.87 kills and digs per game during match wins over St. Louis, Tennessee, Portland and Mississippi.

Following weekend wins over Southern Cal and UCLA, Washington State moved from 16th to 12th in the USA Today/AVCA coaches poll.
