Hillyard Library Offering ‘Driver Education’ For Infopike

Bruce Krasnow Staff writer

For the first time, the city library’s Internet training will move to the North Side with a 90-minute session at the Hillyard Branch Library, 4005 N. Cook.

There’s been quite a bit of interest in the Internet among library users, said Patricia Bonner, Hillyard branch manager, but there is a requirement that patrons go through the orientation session first.

The Internet, a worldwide computer network, can be of particular help to students and those with research needs. It also offers access to government information, magazines and commercial entities that post product information and photographs.

“We have folks in every day wanting to get into the Internet,” said Bonner. “A lot of people come out of basic curiosity. They’ve heard something about it or read it in the media.”

The program is set for Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Advance registration is recommended, as the room can accommodate only 50 people.

For more information or to register, call the library at 626-5380.

Also at the Hillyard branch, the library is offering tutor training workshops for those wishing to get help with literacy training. The workshops are Sept. 30 and Oct. 7, 21, and 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers must attend all four sessions to qualify as a tutor.

Fund-raising can be fun

Those fun-loving community policing volunteers in Nevada-Lidgerwood have two upcoming fund raisers.

On Sept. 29, officer Duane Willshen will dish out pasta at the Spaghetti Station, 718 E. Francis. The Neva-Wood organization will receive $1 for every meal served from 3 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

On Oct. 14, a four-person scramble golf tournament will be held at Esmeralda Golf Course. The $125 donation per team includes greens fee and dinner.

The entry deadline is Oct. 6.

Minnehaha reunion

What started as remembrances of parishioners from the old St. Mary’s Church has turned into the Minnehaha Pioneers, a group trying to bring together people who have lived in the Minnehaha Park area or attended Cooper Elementary.

Organizer Angelo Pizzillo, now an Indian Trail resident, said at least 150 people have shown an interest in the reunion, which will be held at the Ridpath Hotel. A dinner-dance is scheduled Sept. 30, and a brunch is planned on Oct. 1.
