Wheat Agency Gives $1 Million To WSU

From Staff And Wire Reports

The Washington Wheat Commission today will present $1 million to Washington State University for construction of a new wheat breeding research facility in Pullman.

The donation, which was pledged earlier in the year, goes toward construction of the $8.2 million greenhouse that will double the speed of developing new wheat varieties. The commission’s gift comes from fees charged to farmers.

The remaining funds are expected to come from the state, which has pledged $4 million, and Congress, which is considering a $3.2 million appropriation.

University scientists have developed 66 varieties of wheat in the past 50 years, including Orville Vogel’s semi-dwarf wheat that contributed to the Green Revolution.
