“Intensity” cheered the Coeur d’Alene High School girls soccer team as the Vikings broke from their halftime huddle on Tuesday afternoon.

Coeur d’Alene and Lake City still had some unfinished business to tend to after playing to a 0-0 standstill one week earlier in Hayden Lake.

And the Vikings didn’t settle for a tie, thanks to senior Erin Murphy.

The midfielder’s solo goal 54 minutes into the game was all Coeur d’Alene needed for a 1-0 victory.

Defender Linsey Mattison cleared the ball to Murphy whose score in the lower left corner of the net came from about 5 yards.

“I knew I could do it,” Murphy said. “I was going against (Lake City’s) Glenna Ryan. I started thinking, she’ll beat me, but I put that aside and took off.

“It’s the best feeling in the world,” Murphy added.

It was Coeur d’Alene’s first ever win against the Timberwolves, and also the first game played on the new Vikings Field.

“Erin made a very, very nice run,” Vikings coach David Tabakman said. “With Erin’s speed, once she plants that left foot down, she’s tough to stop. She didn’t hold up and shoot, she finished the job. She took advantage of a wonderful, wonderful opportunity.”

Two minutes later, Murphy sent a shot off the Timberwolves’ crossbar.

Lake City took 13 of its 19 shots in the second half, with sophomore goalkeeper Rachel StormoGipson making 11 of her 15 saves after the break.

Lake City (4-1-2, 5-3-3) got eight saves from goalkeeper Jeanne Russell, along with an excellent defensive effort from senior Glenna Ryan.

Lake City travels to Bonners Ferry on Thursday. West Valley visits Coeur d’Alene on Friday.

At Moscow, Alison Roberts’ late goal allowed Lewiston (2-4-1, 2-4-1) to tie the host Bears at 2-2.

Moscow’s Erica Mays (2-3-3, 3-3-3) scored 6 minutes apart in the second half for a 2-1 lead. Moscow outshot the Bengals 12-4 in the first half.
