Ewu To Play Familiar Faces

It won’t go down in the standings, but it ought to be a blast anyway.

Saturday at Eastern Washington University’s Reese Court at 7 p.m., the 1995 EWU volleyball team will face some of their predecessors in the EWU alumni game.

An estimated 30 alums are scheduled to play in the match.

Regardless of the result in this match, EWU coach Pam Parks will get credit for whoever wins.

And speaking of Parks’ victories, she grabbed her 200th career win when Eastern defeated Southeast Missouri 15-9, 15-10, 15-12 on Sept. 17.

Before the Saturday night alumni match, however, the Eagles (0-2 Big Sky, 3-10 overall) will travel to Moscow, Idaho, to face the Idaho Vandals (2-0, 13-2) at Memorial Gym at 7:30 p.m.

Idaho received 20 votes in this week’s AVCA/USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll. Last week the Vandals received 12 votes.

News and notes

The Cougars are 4-0 Pac-10, 11-0 overall and ranked No. 9 in the AVCA/USA Today poll and No. 11 in Volleyball Top 20. Tonight at 7 at Bohler Gym, the Cougars face No. 17 Washington (2-2, 6-5).

Saturday night at Bohler at 7, the Cougars take on Idaho in the classic border-war between the two schools. Since the rivalry began between Washington and Idaho in 1979, the Cougars have a 23-12 series lead.

Gonzaga (2-14) opens conference play at the Martin Centre Friday at 7 p.m. when it takes on Pepperdine (9-4). The Bulldogs take on Loyola Marymount (8-2) on Saturday at 7 at the Martin Centre.

Whitworth (0-4 Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges, 1-12) is on the road to take on league-leading Pacific (3-0, 8-4) Friday at 7 p.m. before another road visit to George Fox College (1-2, 6-7) on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Spokane Community College (0-1 Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges, 10-8) will be participating in the North Idaho Tournament at Coeur d’Alene Friday and Saturday.

The Sasquatch will play NIC at 3 p.m. and Yakima at 5. Saturday they will play Ricks College at 9 a.m. and the College of Southern Idaho at 11 a.m., with the playoffs to start at 3 p.m. and the championship at 5 p.m.
