Accused Teacher Surrenders To Cops

A Garry Middle School teacher accused of having sex with a 14-year-old student turned himself in to police Thursday morning.

Paul Ramsey, 39, was booked into the Spokane County Jail on charges of third-degree rape of a child. His attorney, Carl Oreskovich, brought Ramsey to the Public Safety Building about 7:30 a.m.

The former seventh-grade science teacher was released after posting a $5,000 bond.

Ramsey was fired last month from the Spokane School District, where he worked for the past two years. District officials said Ramsey admitted hugging, kissing and making verbal sexual advances toward the girl earlier this year, but denied having sex with her.

The victim told police the two had sex in her bedroom while her parents were at work one day in July.

Authorities with the state Superintendent’s Office of Professional Practices have launched an investigation into the case as well. Ramsey’s teaching certificate could be revoked.

Ramsey is a Shadle Park High School and Eastern Washington University graduate. He will plead not guilty, Oreskovich said.
