EV Bowls Over Rams As Line Clears The Way

Mike Vlahovich Staff Writer

Frontier League

East Valley’s offensive line was manned at the beginning of the year by a bunch of unknowns. They’re fast making a name for themselves.

For the second straight week, the Knights manhandled a Frontier League opponent, beating Riverside 38-7 largely because those linemen came at the Rams in waves.

EV scored three times in the second quarter, including a 55-yard pass from Brian Lamarche to Kyle LeGrant and an 82-yard sprint by Bill Armtrout.

He was untouched on an inside counter play on the first EV play following Riverside’s touchdown.

“Our sophomore tackle, Ryan Stengle, pancaked their kid on that trap,” said EV coach Jim Clements, incredulous at how well his young line is performing.

The Knights led 28-7 with 27 minutes, 46 seconds of football left. But the game was, in effect, over.

Armtrout finished with 114 yards on six carries.

Junior wingback Mike Lithgow added 67 yards on seven carries with sophomore guard T.J. Horgan and senior Josh Phillips mowing down the people in his path.

Bullish fullback Jesse Ewell had, for him, an average night, gaining 91 yards on 16 attempts, although he scored three times.

Oh, yes. Lamarche also connected with LeGrant on a 46 yarder that set up EV’s final score and finished with 121 yards on 6-of-8 passing.

“That’s what you look for in this offense, balance” said Clements. “For six quarters we’ve been a pretty dominating offensive football team.”

EV needed less than 2 minutes to take a 7-0 lead and used most of the last half of the first quarter to go ahead 14-0, both on Ewell TDs.

It was 21-0 on LeGrant’s catch and run before Riverside mounted its one drive of the night. Featured was a 41-yard reverse by wide receiver Ryan Baker.

Armtrout rode Stengle’s block for the backbreaker 34 seconds later. EV added a touchdown and safety in the final quarter.

“Their offensive line was incredibly dominant,” said Riverside coach Allen Martin, “but I think we played scared. We did not mentally get ready.”

EV outgained Riverside 400 total yards to 121, the defense of Ewell and Jason Sharp helping limit the Rams to minus-1 yard in the second half.
