Gu Ends Skid, Downs Santa Clara

Donnie Murrell and Matt Brunell had RBI singles in the eighth inning as Gonzaga University broke a 4-4 tie in posting a 6-4 West Coast Conference baseball win over Santa Clara University Sunday at August/A.R.T. Stadium.

The Bulldogs (1-11, 6-18) snapped a 13-game losing streak and earned their first WCC victory in 12 tries. Gonzaga is in its first year of WCC baseball membership.

Russ Adams (1-1) picked up the pitching victory in relief, going five innings while allowing seven hits, three runs and two earned runs. He walked one and struck out. Mike McDonald (0-2), the third Santa Clara pitcher, was the loser.

Whitworth 14, George Fox 4

Alex Schuerman had a home run and the Whitworth Pirates collected 17 hits in pounding George Fox 14-4 in a Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges game at Whitworth.

Sam Flemming went the distance for the win, giving up nine hits. The Pirates (2-1, 10-5) were also aided by five Bruins (1-2, 12-10) errors.

Washington’s men’s and women’s crew teams successfully defended their titles in the San Diego Crew Classic, the first major regatta of the collegiate season.

The UW men held off Harvard’s late challenge to capture their second consecutive Copley Cup title and 11th overall.

Washington’s convincing victory in the Whittier Cup was the women’s fifth straight and their 10th title in the event’s 14 years.

The Washington State women finished third in the Whittier Cup.
