Glacier Park Bears Beginning To Awake
Bears are beginning to bounce about Glacier National Park.
Spring really hasn’t arrived yet, but Superintendent David Mihalic said Friday that grizzly bear tracks already have been spotted in the snow.
He said visitors and area residents should be alert for both grizzly and black bears emerging from hibernation.
The first tracks were spotted Friday by park workers on the Going-to-the-Sun Road at Logan Creek, west of the Continental Divide, and also near East Glacier on the east side of the park, Mihalic said.
He said people should avoid any area where it appears bears are feasting on a carcass. “Bears will aggressively protect a food source, especially when surprised,” he said.
“Mothers with cubs are dangerous at any time but may be particularly protective when they venture from their dens with newborn cubs,” Mihalic said.
