Idaho’s Golden Slopes
Alpine skiing Alpine skiing is becoming an increasingly important part of Idaho’s tourism industry, according to a report issued recently by the University of Idaho’s Department of Resource Recreation and Tourism.
The study revealed that skiing brought $81 million into the Idaho economy during the 1994-95 winter, with 60 percent of that total coming from nonresidents.
The study was conducted by a survey of 900 individuals at Bogus Basin, Brundage Mountain, Grand Targhee, Lookout Pass, Pebble Creek, Schweitzer, Silver Mountain and Sun Valley.
Sun Valley accounted for nearly a third of the state’s ski visits and grossed $43 million, because the skiing clientelle is primarily nonresidents. Nonresidents spend twice as much as resident skiers. Washington produced the highest percentage of nonresident skiers (47 percent) followed by Californians (12 percent).
Schweitzer and Silver Mountain skiers spent nearly $13.3 million during that winter, the survey found.
