Fires Set At Superfund Site

From Staff And Wire Reports

Investigators believe two fires at a northeast Spokane Superfund cleanup site Tuesday night were set intentionally. Firefighters spent hours dousing the fires in the 3300 block of North Cook, said Joe Stapleton, a Fire Department battalion chief.

A male youth who may have set other fires was spotted leaving the scene, Stapleton said. Investigators know who he is and planned to talk to him.

The first fire, reported at 6:41 p.m., burned grass, trees and a shed, Stapleton said.

While firefighters were mopping up about two hours later, they spotted flames 150 feet away in a pile of lumber.

The fires at the Spokane Junkyard cleanup site didn’t pose any health hazard to the neighborhood. The state Department of Ecology and Environmental Protection Agency were contacted.
