Smelterville Or Something New?

Residents of Smelterville, Idaho, population 464, are considering changing their town’s name.

Critics of the name say it stigmatizes the town, conveying an image of smokestacks belching industrial pollution. They’re seeking suggestions for alternatives.

Those who want to preserve the name, however, say it’s part of the Silver Valley’s mining heritage. The name has served the town well since the 1920s, they argue.
