Lc Can’t Weather Storm, Conant
Baseball/softball
University used a solid pitching performance from Bill Conant and some help from Mother Nature Thursday afternoon to grab sole possession of first place in the Greater Spokane League baseball standings.
The Titans staked Conant to an early lead at Seafirst Stadium and then rode his four-hit pitching to a 10-3 win over Lewis and Clark in the only GSL game played.
Scheduled contests between North Central and Shadle Park, Central Valley and Gonzaga Prep and Roger and Ferris were postponed because of wet grounds.
The entire slate of GSL softball games was also washed out, but the Frontier League managed to squeeze in a pair of make-up contests in which Clarkston dumped Riverside 15-3 and Cheney knocked off Pullman 5-2.
The rained-out GSL baseball games will be made up on Saturday. NC is at Shadle at 11 a.m., Rogers is at Ferris at 1 p.m. and CV will play at G-Prep at noon.
All GSL softball games will be made up Monday. NC is at Shadle, CV is at G-Prep and Rogers it at Ferris at 3:45 p.m., and LC is at U-High at 4 p.m.
Baseball
U-High (7-2) scored nine runs in the first two innings and never let LC (1-8) within seven runs the rest of the way. Chris Kreider went 4 for 4 for the Titans and teammate Andy Dunham drove in two runs with a pair of singles.
The win gave U-High a half-game lead over G-Prep and Ferris, who are both 6-2.
Softball
In FL makeup games originally scheduled for Tuesday, Cheney (2-6) used the 14-strikeout performance of Cecilia Sooy to hold off Pullman (0-6) at Cheney, while Clarkston (4-2) bunched 10 runs in the first inning to fuel its home-field rout of Riverside (0-6).
Cheney combined a walk, a double by Katie Rotchford and a pair of fielders-choice grounders to score its game-winning run in the fourth inning against Pullman.
Clarkston built its decisive first-inning outburst against Riverside on a pair of walks, a hit batter and seven hits - three of which were two-run singles.
The game was stopped because of the 12-run rule in the bottom of the sixth after Randi Knopes tripled home the Bantams’ final run.
