Geraldine Saywers Spokane

Service for Geraldine Grace Saywers, 59, will be at 11 a.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Cremation will follow.

Mrs. Saywers, who was born in San Diego, died Tuesday.

She had lived in Spokane since 1979 and was a homemaker.

She was a board member of the Greater Spokane Shetland Sheep Dog Club and was a member of Calvary Chapel.

Mrs. Sawyers is survived by her husband of 41 years, Herbert Saywers; one son, Anthony Saywers, and two daughters, Athena Poumele and Teresa Canfield, all of Spokane; one sister, Barbara Vargas of San Diego; her mother, Nina Smithers of Spokane; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association of Washington or the American Cancer Society.

Albert ‘Mike’ Derbyshire Smelterville, Idaho

Memorial service for Albert “Mike” Derbyshire, 67, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Osburn (Idaho) Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall. Shoshone Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Derbyshire, a lifelong Silver Valley resident, died Tuesday.

He was born in Kellogg and later served in the Army during the Korean War.

After his military discharge, he worked for the Shoshone County Road Department for 24 years, retiring in 1985.

Mr. Derbyshire was a member of the Osburn Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1675 and the Good Sam Club.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Lois; two sons, Allan of Kingston, Idaho, and Jay of Osburn; three daughters, Susan Harold of Wallace, Kristi Eaton of Smelterville and Tammie Marguess; four sisters, Maria Wilder of Minnesota, Beth Williams of Coeur d’Alene, and Mary and Alberta Derbyshire, both of Pinehurst, Idaho; and one brother, Jack Derbyshire of Oregon.

Laura Hirst Spokane

Memorial Mass for Laura M. Hirst, 86, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mary Queen Catholic Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Spangle, Mrs. Hirst died Tuesday.

She had been a longtime Spokane resident and had lived on the Washington coast before returning to Spokane five years ago.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband of 24 years, Donald Hirst; one son, Ron Owen of Portland; one daughter, Shirley Karlson of Auburn, Wash.; two stepsons; two sisters and two brothers; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Irving Schlesinger Coeur d’Alene

A celebration of life for Irving Michael Schlesinger, 60, will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. aboard the Kootenai cruise boat at the Boardwalk Marina Docks at the Coeur d’Alene Resort. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schlesinger, who was born in Philadelphia, died Tuesday.

He graduated from high school in Arizona, where he later attended college. He moved to California and worked as a contractor until moving to Coeur d’Alene in 1991.

He started the gift store “Schlesinger’s Street of Dreams” in the Coeur d’Alene Plaza, now located in the NorthTown Mall in Spokane.

Survivors include his wife Atsuko; two daughters, Julie Schlesinger of New York and Robyn Schlesinger of California; one stepson, Nathan Baggs of California; his mother, Minnie Schlesinger of Arizona; one brother, Richard Schlesinger of California; and one nephew, Ryan Schlesinger of California.

Gladys Schierman Spokane

Service for Gladys M. Schierman, 85, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at East Valley Baptist Church. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of cremation.

Mrs. Schierman, who was born in LaCrosse, Wash., died Tuesday at home.

She was a homemaker and had lived in Spokane for 80 years.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Adolph “Art” Schierman; five sons, Bill, Larry, Roger and Robert Schierman, all of Spokane, and Gerald Schierman of Nacogdoches, Texas; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane.

Darlene Maggard Greenacres

Graveside service and burial of the urn for Darlene M. Maggard, 79, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Maggard, who died March 30, was born in Milton-Freewater, Ore.

She had lived in Spokane for 70 years and graduated from Hillyard High School.

She had worked as a sportswear buyer for local clothing stores.

Mrs. Maggard was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association.

She is survived by her husband of 30 years, Gary Maggard; two daughters, Sherry Watts of Medical Lake and Judy Harvey of Amarillo, Texas; one brother, James “Bud” McGhee of Spokane; four grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Charlie Jeske Odessa, Wash.

Service for Charlie R. Jeske, 83, will be at 1 p.m. today at Christ Lutheran Church in Odessa. Burial will be at Odessa City Cemetery. Strate Funeral Home in Odessa is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Jeske, who died Tuesday, was born in Warden, Wash.

He was a wheat farmer.

His wife of 61 years, Ruth, died in 1994.

He is survived by one daughter, Marge O’Neal of Odessa; six grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren.

Cyril Arndt Spokane

Memorial service for Cyril S. Arndt, 83, will be at 4 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Private inurnment will be held at a later date.

Mr. Arndt, a 30-year Spokane resident, died Tuesday. He was born in Monroe, Wash.

He graduated from high school in Wenatchee and served in the Army and the Marine Corps during World War II. He also worked as an undercover agent in Washington state shipyards during the war.

He worked for the Washington State Patrol as a trooper until 1965 and then went to work for the Washington State Utilities and Transportation Department at the port of entry in Spokane.

Mr. Arndt was a member of the retired Washington State Troopers Association, the Valley Elks Lodge and the Rosicrucian.

He was an award winning ballroom dancer and was a contributor and advisor to the creation of the Chelan County Historical Museum in Cashmere, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth.

Survivors include two sons, David Arndt of Tacoma and Bruce Arndt of Spokane; one daughter, Sonya Baker of Aberdeen, Wash.; three brothers and two sisters; seven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Blanche Finlay Spokane

Graveside service for Blanche V. (Lance) Finlay, 92, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Pendleton, Ore., Mrs. Finlay died Tuesday.

She was a school teacher in Oregon, and taught primary grades in a oneroom school house.

She had lived in Spokane for 25 years.

Mrs. Finlay’s husband, Herb, died in 1971.

She is survived by one niece, Ruth Jones of Montesano, Wash.; one grandniece and one grandnephew.

Edith Osborn Kennewick

Memorial service for Edith A. Olson, 77, will be at 4 p.m. today at Spokane Bethel Church of the Nazarene.

Mrs. Osborn, who was born in Dayton, Wash., died Saturday in Kennewick, where she had lived for the past three years.

She moved to Spokane around 1945 and worked at Liberty Park Greenhouses. She met her husband, Art Osborn, while working there and they were married in 1946. He died in 1986.

Survivors include two sons, Chuck Kemp of Temecula, Calif., and John Osborn of Seattle; one daughter, Betty Buswell of Cosmopolis, Wash.; three brothers, Ed and Gene Moran, both of Kennewick, and Art Moran of Texas; and five grandchildren.

Minnie Roeske Post Falls

Service for Minnie Naomi Roeske, 79, will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls.

Mrs. Roeske, who was born in Wellpinit, Wash., died Monday.

She grew up in Wellpinit, later moving to Ione, Wash. She moved to Kellogg in 1957 and worked as a cook at the Sunshine Inn Restaurant.

Mrs. Roeske lived in Blanchard, Idaho, before moving to Post Falls in 1990. She was a member of the Post Falls Senior Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Carl, in 1990. Survivors include a son, Walt Roeske of Coeur d’Alene; two daughters, Tina Barina of Texas and Lois Sackmann of California; two brothers, Emmett Webb of Newport, Wash., and Chuck Dyer of Wilbur, Wash.; two sisters, Lorraine Haynes of Colville, Wash., and Laura Douvia of Montana; and six grandchildren.

Gertrude Mabbott Corvallis, Mont.

Graveside service for Gertrude “Trudy” Mabbott, 89, was Thursday at Three Mile Cemetery north of Stevensville, Mont. Daly-Leach Funeral Home in Hamilton, Mont., was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mabbott, a former Spokane resident, died Monday in Hamilton at the Valley View Estates. She was born in Minot, N.D.

She moved to the Spokane area and, in 1942, married Leonard Mabbott. They lived in Spokane until 1979, when they moved to Montana.

She was a homemaker.

Her husband died in 1991.

She is survived by one stepdaughter, Virginia Smyth, of Corvallis; two stepsons, Dave Mabbott of Victor, Mont., and Edward Mabbott of Boise; two sisters, Ann Schaal and Delphine Lovell, both of Spokane; 10 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
