Rain, Mudslides Hit Western Washington

From Staff And Wire Reports

Heavy rains across Western Washington caused mudslides that knocked several houses off their foundations Tuesday and forced evacuations of other threatened homes.

High winds and falling trees knocked out power to thousands in southwest Washington.

On Bainbridge Island west of here, mud sliding down a steep hill knocked one home onto Manitou Beach and residents of about 15 beachfront homes were evacuated.

The slide pushed one house off its foundation and appeared to threaten homes atop a bluff, KIRO-TV reported.

The Bainbridge Island Fire Department refused to release any information Tuesday night.

In Seattle, another mudslide knocked a house off its foundation in the Perkins Lane area along the Magnolia bluff, witnesses said. At least two other minor slides were reported Tuesday on the steep slide-prone hillside.
