Man Reportedly Hits Officer After Stop

From Staff And Wire Reports

A Newport, Wash., man with a long criminal record reportedly attacked a police officer and threatened another in downtown Spokane on Tuesday night.

Kenneth Leo Gourneau, 37, got combative when officers stopped his car near Lincoln and Riverside, police spokesman Dick Cottam said.

The officer who was hit did not require medical attention.

Police said Gourneau was weaving across the center line and almost hit a bus during a short pursuit.

He was arrested for attempting to elude an officer, assault, driving while intoxicated and driving with a suspended license.

Cottam said Gourneau has been convicted 15 times, twice for obstructing police officers.
