Bonds Joins Dad In 300-300 Club

Associated Press

National League

Barry Bonds joined his father and godfather in some elite company Saturday. Then he got thrown out of the game.

The San Francisco outfielder homered in the third inning against the Florida Marlins to become only the fourth major leaguer to hit 300 homers and steal 300 bases.

He joined Bobby Bonds, his father, Willie Mays, his godfather, and Andre Dawson as the only players to reach the 300-300 mark.

Bonds hit his second homer of the game in the fifth inning, but after striking out in the seventh, he was ejected for arguing with home-plate umpire Mark Hirschbeck.

In the third, Bonds hit a two-run homer off former teammate John Burkett. Bonds raised his arms over his head as he circled the bases and received a standing ovation from the crowd at 3Com Park.

When he returned to the dugout, Bonds hugged his father, the Giants’ first-base coach, who had 332 homers and 461 career steals.

Mets 7, Pirates 4

Pittsburgh

Kevin Roberson hit a three-run homer off Pittsburgh closer Dan Miceli in the ninth inning and New York beat up on Pittsburgh’s battered bullpen.

Miceli (0-1) pitched out of a two-on, two-out jam in the eighth, but walked Jose Vizcaino, who reached base four times, and Bernard Gilkey with one out in the ninth. Roberson then watched two pitches before hitting a 1-1 fastball deep into the lower right-field stands for his second homer.

Astros 6, Padres 0

San Diego

Shane Reynolds pitched a four-hitter and Jeff Bagwell hit a two-run homer as Houston snapped San Diego’s six-game winning streak.

Clearing the bases

Rockies right-hander Bill Swift, who threw 43 pitches without pain in the bullpen Friday night, pronounced himself ready to pitch and is hoping to make his 1996 debut in a May 9-12 series at Florida. Swift underwent off-season shoulder surgery. … Atlanta’s David Justice has a 10-game hitting streak and is batting .406 (13 for 33) in that stretch. … Philadelphia’s Kevin Stocker has hit safely in his last seven games (8 for 24). … The Phillies have won their last six road games.

Montreal’s string of 11 consecutive games with a home run came to an end. The Expos have hit 36 homers, a club record for the month of April and one shy of the club record for any month.
