Crews Clear Roads After Typhoon Herb

Compiled From Wire Services

Rescue workers struggled Sunday to clear roads to stranded villagers four days after Typhoon Herb battered Taiwan, leaving 51 people dead in its wake.

Police said eight villages in mountainous Nantou county, 120 miles south of Taipei, still were cut off by mudslides and rockfalls after the worst storm to hit the island in 30 years.

Army helicopters delivered canned food and water to the hard-hit villages, and officials estimated it may take weeks to restore transportation links.

Remote mountainous areas in Pingtung and Hsinchu counties in central and southern Taiwan, where roads and bridges were washed out, also received airlifted supplies.

In addition to the deaths, Herb also caused an $500 million in crop damage.
