Kenneth Brooks Spokane

Memorial service for Kenneth W. Brooks, 79, will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Brooks, founder of Brooks, Hensley, Creager Architects, died Thursday.

He was born in Caney, Kan.

He graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in architecture and was awarded a Plym Fellowship for travel and study in Europe. He was a captain in the Marine Corps during World War II.

In 1948, he took his delayed Plym Fellowship to Europe. He worked in Sweden with architects and city planners in Stockholm and Gothenburg.

He arrived in Spokane in 1949 and began his architectural practice in 1951. Some of the projects he participated in include The Washington Water Power Co. Spokane headquarters; Deaconess Hospital; Intermountain Gas Co. headquarters in Boise; First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Spokane; the No. 1 Lodge at Mount Spokane; and the Australian and Republic of China pavilions at Expo ‘74.

As a consultant he was one of seven American architects chosen in 1964 to assess earthquake damage in Alaska for President Johnson. He served on a team of specialists to establish environmental covenants in the Fiji Islands. In 1969, he wrote the long-range environmental plan covering 80,000 acres in the Grand Coulee Dam area down the Columbia River to the ocean and upriver to the Canadian Rockies.

Mr. Brooks was a nationally recognized speaker on architecture and urban planning and was very active in local civic organizations. In 1964, he was awarded the first annual Distinguished Citizen Award from the Spokane Rotary Club.

He was a member and Fellow of the American Institute of Architecture, was the first chairman of the Urban Design Commission for the national American Institute of Architecture, past president of the former Spokane Municipal League, past president of the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and a member and deacon at First Presbyterian Church. He also served as a member of the Washington State Arts Commission, the Governor’s Executive Committee of Design for Washington, and the National Urban Design Committee of the American Institute of Architects,

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Edna Herrington Brooks; a son, William Brooks of Spokane; two daughters, Barbara Brooks of Portland and Ann Brooks Harper of San Francisco; a niece, Joy Phillips Moorhead of Olympia; and seven grandchildren.

Rita Howarth Spokane

Rosary service for Rita G. Howarth, 80, is planned for 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Howarth died Tuesday while vacationing in Portland.

She was born in Parkersburg, W. Va.

She had lived in Spokane since 1946 and was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, the church service guild and Corbin Park Community Center.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Chester; three daughters, Mary Indgjerd of Colbert, Barbara Nelson of Hillsboro, Ore., and Joan Bowyer of Portland; a brother, Roderick Newell of Parkersburg, W. Va.; and four grandchildren.

Gladys (Hertel) Fuller Spokane

Graveside service for Gladys M. (Hertel) Fuller, 84, is set for 10 a.m. today at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Edwall, Wash., Mrs. Fuller died last Saturday.

She graduated from Edwall High School and was a member of the Eagles Lodge, the Moose Lodge and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Her husband, Alfred Fuller, died in 1983.

Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Tryon of Seattle, and two grandchildren.

Elisabeth Herzog Spokane

Funeral Mass for Elisabeth Herzog, 90, is set for 10 a.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Herzog, who was born in the Ukraine, died Thursday.

She emigrated to Germany after World War II and later to the United States. She had lived in Spokane since 1958 and was a homemaker.

Her husband, Valentin, died in 1985.

Survivors include four sons, Willi, Johannes and Michael Herzog, all of Spokane, and Alex Herzog of Boulder, Colo.; and a daughter, Maria McKeirnan of Spokane.

Lorraine Colomb Cheney

Graveside service for Bessie Lorraine Colomb, 91, is set for 2:30 p.m. Monday at Pinecrest Cemetery in Sandpoint. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-Cheney is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Colomb, who was born in Bancroft, Idaho, died Friday.

When she was 14, she moved with her family to Sandpoint.

In 1923 she married William “Randy” Colomb in Sandpoint.

They moved to Dalkena, Wash., and also lived in Spokane, Coeur d’Alene, Oregon, Montana and California. They moved to Cheney in 1972.

She was a member of the RNC, a Grange organization; the Grandmothers Club; Cheney Senior Citizens; and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Her husband died in February .

She is survived by a daughter, Marie Osterberg of Cheney; five grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Charles Fritts Spokane

No service will be held for Charles R. “Chuck” Fritts, 72, at his request. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Fritts, a 40-year Spokane resident, died Wednesday.

He was born in Preston, Wash.

He was a resident of Spokane for more than 40 years.

He was an ironworker and a member of the Ironworkers Union, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1435 and the Eagles Lodge.

Mr. Fritts is survived by his wife of 47 years, Thelma; three daughters, Sandy Gepford, Sherry Stolz and Patty Warne; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Maxine Eddy Spokane

Memorial service for Maxine A. Eddy, 82, is planned for 1 p.m. today at Thornhill Funeral Home. Private inurnment will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Eddy, who was born in Sandpoint, died Wednesday.

She lived in Hutchinson, Kan., and Lewiston before moving to Spokane 50 years ago.

She was a homemaker.

Her husband of 57 years, Burt, died in 1990.

Survivors include five daughters, Elizabeth Hackett, Lillian Hoadley Patricia Johnson, Marilyn Pringle and Helen Kincade, all of Spokane; 13 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Marvin Lyon Spokane

Memorial service for Marvin C. Lyon, 66, will be at 2 p.m. today at Greenacres Baptist Church. Private graveside service was Friday at Riverside Memorial Park. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mr. Lyon died Wednesday.

He was born in Spokane and was raised in Spirit Lake, Idaho. He returned to Spokane in 1965.

In 1954 he married Darlene Hendry.

He worked for Kaiser Aluminum.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Jerry Lyon of Ketchum, Idaho; a daughter, Connie Beneke of Spokane; his mother, Malena Sippert of Spokane; a sister, Martha Patterson of New York City; and three grandchildren.

Raymond Franetich Spokane

Private viewing for Raymond J. Franetich, 74, will be held at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Cremation will follow.

Mr. Franetich, who died Wednesday, was born in Stockett, Mont.

He had lived in Spokane for 33 years and was a retired miner.

He is survived by his wife, Violet; six daughters, Carla Pintler, Nella Anderson, Donna Carrier, Marla Armstrong, Valerie Astleford and Char; four sons, Tony, Bruce, Ray and Joe Franetich; and 25 grandchildren.

Mildred Miller Spokane

Memorial service for Mildred G. Miller, 71, will be today at 2 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in St. Maries. Inurnment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Miller, who was born in Usk, Wash., died Tuesday.

She grew up in St. Maries and later operated heavy equipment for logging operations.

Ms. Miller moved to Bonners Ferry in 1966 and owned a local business. She moved to Spokane in 1986, following a divorce, and retired in 1987.

Survivors include two daughters, Pat Proulx of Renton, Wash., and Cheri Kim of Idaho Falls; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
