Two Fires Allowed To Burn In Park

Two lightning-sparked fires were being allowed to burn in different parts of Yellowstone National Park on Tuesday, but crews were on alert in case conditions changed.

Park spokeswoman Stacy Churchwell said a fire in the Pelican Valley just north of Yellowstone Lake blew up Monday night from about a quarter-acre to about 50 acres.

She said the Pelican Valley fire, which started Sunday, was in a remote area far from the nearest development.

The Coyote fire burning near the Hellroaring River in the northern part of the park also grew Monday due to winds. Churchwell said it had reached about 30 acres by Tuesday morning.

Park officials said Tuesday both fires remained well within prescribed-burn criteria.
