Grass-Field Burning Sparks Several Blazes

From Staff And Wire Reports

Grass-field burning got off to a bad start Monday in Spokane County, with firefighters scrambling to respond to several out-of-control blazes.

The first of the fires in the foothills near Mount Spokane occurred shortly after 11:30 a.m., when winds pushed a field burn near Farwell and Peck roads into nearby woods, fire officials said.

An hour later, farmers torching a field at Lehman and Pleasant Prairie roads reported that a whirlwind swept the fire into a nearby field.

Later that afternoon, a third fire was sparked when embers from a completed burn blew into a field off Pleasant Prairie Road.

Firefighters doused all of the fires. No injuries were reported.

At 2:30 p.m., Spokane County Fire District 9 asked the county air pollution control authority to stop further grass burning.
