Carl Holmgard Spokane
Visitation for Carl D. Holmgard, 77, is scheduled from noon to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral HomeNorth. Service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church with burial at Fairmount Memorial Park.
Mr. Holmgard, who was born Reserve, Mont., died Sunday.
He graduated from Antelope (Mont.) High School.
He ran a grain farm in Dagmar, Mont., for many years and moved to Spokane when he retired in 1980.
He was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and the Danish Brotherhood.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Hazel Holmgard; three daughters, Leah Wagnild, Audrey Barstow and Cleo Allen, all of Spokane; a brother, Clarence Holmgard of Fifty Lakes, Minn.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane or the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Building Fund.
Dennis Smith St. John, Wash.
Service for Dennis L. Smith, 53, is planned for 10 a.m. today at St. John Methodist Church. Burial will be at St. John Cemetery. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-Cheney is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Spokane, Mr. Smith died Sunday.
He graduated from St. John (Wash.) High School and from Washington State University in agricultural economics.
He worked with Merrill Lynch as a commodities broker in New York City and Chicago. He returned to the family farm in St. John in 1968 and became a farmer.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Kay Smith; his parents, Elmer and Nancy Smith of St. John; two daughters, Julie Ward of Ireland and Lori Smith of Seattle; a son, Steve Smith of Seattle; a brother, Neal Smith of Spokane; and a sister, Sharon Smith of Seattle.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. John Volunteer Fire Department or the St. John Community Club.
Donald Armstrong Spokane
No service will be held for Donald M. Armstrong, at his request. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr Armstrong, 81, died Sunday. He was born in La Grande, Ore.
A longtime Spokane resident, he retired as an insurance adjustor for American States Insurance.
He served in the Navy during World War II.
His wife, Josephine Armstrong, died in 1982.
He is survived by a niece, Janet Paul of Edwall, Wash.
Diana Herbst Spokane
Vigil service for Diana C. Herbst, 23, is planned for 7 p.m. today at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, with burial at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Ms. Herbst died Thursday.
She was born in Novato, Calif., and had lived in Spokane since 1981.
Ms. Herbst graduated from Mead High School and was a beautician.
She is survived by two daughters, Jori and Caitlin Herbst, both of Spokane; her parents, Ed and Rebecca Herbst of Spokane; a brother, Eddie Herbst, and a sister, Este Herbst, both of Spokane; and her grandparents, Bruno and Lola Rosales of San Antonio, Texas.
George Calvert Hermiston, Ore.
Graveside service for the Rev. George D. Calvert, a former Spokane resident, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Desert Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Irrigon, Ore. Burns Mortuary in Hermiston is in charge of arrangements.
The Rev. Calvert, 77, died Thursday at Good Samaritan Center in Hermiston.
He was born in Juliaetta, Idaho, where he graduated from high school.
He graduated from seminary college in Huntington, Ind., and was ordained into the United Brethren Church.
He pastored in Spokane and had lived on and off in Spokane for the past 46 years.
He served in the Army and was an electronics repairman.
He is survived by two sons, George Calvert of Irrigon, Ore., and Devan Calvert of Spokane; two daughters, Ruth Hackett of Milpitas, Calif., and Sharon Alexander of Monterey, Calif.; a brother, Golan Calvert of Lewiston; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Robert Arneson Rockford
Graveside service for Robert L. Arneson, 68, is planned for 1 p.m. Thursday at Mica Creek Cemetery south of Freeman. A reception will follow at the United Methodist Church in Rockford. Hennessey Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Arneson, a lifetime Rockford resident, died Sunday.
He graduated from Rockford High School and farmed the property his grandparents had settled on in 1902.
The area was referred to as “Little Norway” due to the number of settlers of Scandinavian heritage.
Mr. Arneson is survived by his wife of 45 years, Leslie Arneson; a son, Larry Arneson of Rockford; a daughter, Judy Arneson of Endicott, Wash.; a brother, Dale Arneson of Long Beach, Calif.; and a grandson.

Walter Dailey Priest River, Idaho
Memorial service for Walter Leroy Dailey, 71, will be at 1 p.m. today at Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Priest River.
Mr. Dailey died Thursday in Spokane. He was born in Berg, N.D.
He and his family moved to Priest River in 1930.
He served in the Navy during World War II and married Doris DeMoss in 1949.
He had operated Dailey’s Body Shop in Priest River since 1972.
His wife died in 1990.
Survivors include four sons, Gregory and Walter Dailey Jr., both of Spokane, Wesley Dailey of Priest River and James Dailey of Sandpoint; two brothers, Lemm Dailey of Marysville, Wash., and Lawrence Dailey of Priest River; two sisters, Rachael and Flora Cary, both of Priest River; and nine grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.
Dale Bender Clayton, Wash.
Memorial service for Dale F. Bender, 46, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North.
Mr. Bender, who died Saturday, was born in Spokane.
He had lived in Spokane until moving to Clayton four years ago.
He served in the Army from 1968 to 1972, during the Vietnam War, and was a member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 45.
He is survived by three daughters, Stacy Bender of Portland, Carly Bender of Mead and Kayla Bender of Spokane; two sons, Trevor Bender of Portland and Bryce Bender of Spokane; his mother, Elizabeth “Betty” Bender of Nine Mile Falls; two sisters, Mary Anne Cooley of Salem, Ore., and Cherri Dolan of Spokane; and two brothers, Robert Bender of Reno, Nev., and Kenneth Bender of Spokane.
John Spencer Spokane
A memorial service for John C. Spencer, 53, will be at 3:30 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at Pines Cemetery.
Mr. Spencer, who died Sunday, was born in Wendell, Idaho.
He graduated from high school in Twin Falls, Idaho, and graduated from Idaho State University.
He had lived in Spokane for 27 years and worked for National Pharmacy Service in Liberty Lake.
He was a member of Berean Bible Church.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Barbara; two sons, Brad and Brian Spencer, both of Seattle; and a brother, David Spencer of Helena.

Wilma Marden Metaline, Wash.
Memorial service for Wilma Marie Marden, 71, will be at 4 p.m. today at United Church of Christ in Metaline Falls, Wash. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Marden, a 40-year Metaline, resident, died Saturday. She was born in Newport.
She married Randall Kleiner in 1943 in Wisconsin.
They lived in Ione, Wash., and Newport, and moved to Metaline in 1968. Her husband died in 1970.
In 1971, she married Bert Marden.
She worked in the Metaline area as a restaurant cook, a sales clerk, housekeeper, Avon representative, cake decorator in an Ione bakery, and a bookkeeper for the Metaline Falls ambulance service.
She was a cook for the Headstart program and also at the hospital in Metaline Falls. She later became a dietitian.
She was a member of the Metaline Birthday Club.
She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Mary Ann Sackman of Bremerton and Ruth Reiber of Metaline; four sisters, Marjorie Ellison of Ione, Ruth Cox of Plummer, Idaho, Alice Wilson of Ridgefield, Wash., and Charlotte Davis of Bridgeport, Wash.; a brother, Ervin Dennison of Ione; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Paul Sceva Jr. Spokane
A memorial gathering for Paul H. Sceva Jr., 79, will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday on the 17th floor of the Farm Credit Building. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Sceva died Sunday. He was born in Tacoma.
He graduated from the University of Washington, where he was the intramural wrestling champion in his weight class when he was a freshman in 1935.
He had climbed Mount Rainier several times and won the Silver Skis race at Mount Rainier in 1934. He was a reserve member of the U.S. Olympic Ski Team in Europe in 1937.
Mr. Sceva was a Spokane resident for 50 years and worked as a general contractor from 1949 to 1970, when he retired.
Projects he worked on include the Parkade downtown, the Kennedy Pavilion at Gonzaga University, Jewett House, and numerous buildings for Safeway and Pacific Northwest Bell.
He was a member of the Rotary Club of Spokane and the Elks Lodge. He held a private pilot’s license and was an Eagle Scout.
He is survived by his wife, Christina Sceva; three daughters, Julie Martin of Port Angeles, Wash., Diane Alling of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Melanie Hill of Whidbey Island, Wash.; five grandchildren; and a sister, Pauline Weiss of Los Gatos, Calif.
