Appeal For Aid

Associated Press

The U.N. food relief agency appealed to the United States on Wednesday to send emergency rations for thousands of new Chechen refugees.

The Rome-based World Food Program said it expected up to 20,000 Chechens to flee the Russian republic.

Panicked civilians streamed out of Chechnya on Wednesday in the face of Russian warnings of an all-out attack on the rebel capital, Grozny.

The agency urged the United States to airlift 160 tons of food, consisting of 140,000 prepared meals - enough to last a week.

The refugees were expected to head west for the Russian republics of Ingushetia and North Ossetia, the agency said.

The United States airlifted 40 tons of food last month for Chechen refugees to Dagestan, a republic to the east, the agency said.
