Late Work On EV Field Crowds Season
The remodeling of East Valley athletic facilities is welcome, but the timing wasn’t exactly ideal.
The Knight football stadium is currently in disarray, just two weeks before the beginning of the season.
Piles of dirt lie around the facility and the turf is torn up for water pipes. Completion is scheduled for October, approximately a month into the season.
“Somebody in that building was not communicating with someone in this building,” EV football coach Jim Clements said, only half in jest.
First, two home football games for the Knights will be played at Central Valley High School.
“We’ve been told the rest (including homecoming) will be on our home field,” Clements said.
East Valley football teams practice next door on the middle school field and jayvee football games will be played there until the high school field is complete.
The EV bond issue for the improvements was passed last February, but work didn’t get started until late in the summer.
Existing tennis courts are being re-surfaced and new ones added.
The all-weather track surrounding EV’s football field is also undergoing longoverdue repairs.
The first all-weather surface at a Valley school was worn to the asphalt base in some places. The Knights had no home track meets for three years and practiced sparingly on it.
With the renovation and the construction of a track at University High, all four high schools will now have usable all-weather tracks.
U-Hi was the only Greater Spokane League school still practicing on a dirt surface but within a week or two, said activities coordinator Bill Ames, the long-awaited project there will be complete.
The U-Hi stadium is also being upgraded.
Fall Roundup soccer weekend
Soccer aficionados will get their fill during the 15th annual Fall Roundup tournament at Mountain View Middle School.
Played on 14 fields at the Mountain View complex and at Otis Orchards, the tourney has attracted 109 teams from four states.
“The only thing limiting us is field space,” said River City Soccer Club president Peachey Turnbull. “We had to turn away 20 teams and last year turned away 15.”
River City is sponsor of the annual event, which features select and premier boys teams from U12 through U19 age groups and girls teams from U12 through U16.
Teams will come from Boise, Helena and Billings, Mont., the Portland area and throughout Washington.
Competition will begin Friday and continue through the Labor Day weekend. Finals are Monday at 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Scoring only counts half-way
