Leora Rhoads Soap Lake, Wash.

Service for Leora Elberta Rhoads, a former Spokane resident, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Community Evangelical Free Church in Soap Lake. Burial will follow at Valley View Memorial Park in Soap Lake. Nicoles Funeral Home in Ephrata, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Rhoads, who died Wednesday, was 77.

She was born in Havre, Mont., and moved to Spokane as a child with her family.

She married Miles Rhoads in 1937. They moved to Indian Prairie, near Spokane, and operated a dairy farm.

In 1965, they moved to Soap Lake, where they also operated a dairy farm until they retired.

She is survived by her husband; two sons, Darold and Dwight Rhoads, both of Soap Lake; two stepdaughters, Cheri Philips of Soap Lake and Rachel Moreno of Ephrata, Wash.; six sisters, Grace Williams, Demorise Schelling and Bernadine Bradbury, all of Spokane, Joyce Rose and Francine Evans, both of Moses Lake, and Janice Bickle of Odessa, Wash.; a brother, Rodney Hoose of Soap Lake; nine grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Robert Pope Spokane

Service for Robert N. “Rob” Pope, 41, is planned for 11 a.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. A reception will follow at St. Augustine Parish Hall. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Pope, who died Aug. 23, was born in Spokane and graduated from North Central High School.

He worked for Sturm Heating as a boilermaker.

He was involved in the Children’s Theatre and attended Eastern Washington University.

Survivors include his companion, Gaye Pendleton of Spokane; his children, Danny, Nicole, Mitch, Millie, Hannah and Aesean, all of Spokane; his father and mother, Peter and Marie Pope of Spokane; three brothers, Richard Pope of Bellingham, Mike Pope of Spokane and John Pope of Anacortes, Wash.; two sisters, Rita Pope-Preston of Spokane and Colleen Frederick of Portland.

Anna McLeod Spokane

Service for Anna Mary McLeod, 96, will be at 1 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mrs. McLeod, who died Wednesday, was born in Cottonwood, Mont.

After she finished high school, she worked for a collection agency in Lewistown, Mont. She moved to Spokane in the early 1930s and went to work at Rosenlund Bakery and Johnson’s Coffee Shop.

She later worked for the County Health Department until she retired in the mid 1970s.

She also owned and operated an apartment house for many years.

Her husband, Donald McLeod, preceded her in death.

She is survived by a brother, Ben Samuels of Spokane.

Roger ‘Bob’ Bender Spokane

Service for Roger W. “Bob” Bender, 66, is set for 11 a.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Cremation will follow.

Mr. Bender, who died Wednesday, was born in Brenham, Texas.

He was a 42-year Spokane resident.

He worked for Kaiser Aluminum and was a member of the United Steelworkers Union Local 329.

There are no known survivors.

Kenneth McLaughlin Spokane

Memorial service for Kenneth E. “Ken” McLaughlin, 60, was Friday at Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church.

Mr. McLaughlin, who died Wednesday, was born in Montrose, Colo.

He moved to Butte, Mont., when he was 10.

He was married in Butte and worked as a miner there and in Deer Lodge, Mont.

Mr. McLaughlin moved to Spokane 31 years ago and graduated from Eastern Washington University. He became physically disabled at a relatively early age.

Mr. McLaughlin is survived by his wife of 38 years, Deloris McLaughlin; two daughters, Cheryl Gordon and Laura Crafton; a son, Steven McLaughlin; three sisters, three brothers and nine grandchildren.

Twila Million Moscow, Idaho

Service for Twila E. Million, 68, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Moscow Church of the Nazarene. Burial will follow at Freeze Cemetery, north of Potlatch, Idaho. Kramer Funeral Home of Palouse is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Million died Thursday from cancer.

She was born in Latah County, Idaho, and graduated from Garfield (Wash.) High School.

In 1946 she married Gene Million at her parents’ home. She and her husband moved to Moscow in 1949.

Mrs. Million worked for Green’s Cleaners in Moscow from 1962 until 1975, when she went to work for the University of Idaho Library for 18 years.

Her husband died in 1986.

Survivors include a son, Rick Million of Moscow; a daughter, Pamela Pauley of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; two brothers, Berwyn Palmer of Post Falls and Donovan Palmer of Potlatch; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Palouse or the Latah Health Homecare and Hospice, both in Moscow.

Arthur Armstead Sr. Spokane

Service for Arthur D. Armstead Sr., 73, will be at 2 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Born in Little Rock, Ark., Mr. Armstead died Tuesday.

He had lived in Spokane since 1952 and worked for Kaiser Aluminum in Trentwood. He retired in 1982.

He was a member of United Steelworkers Union Local 338.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel Armstead; four sons, Curtis, Arthur, Richard and Ronnie Armstead, all of Spokane; two daughters, Cathy Armstead of Chicago and Valerie Indifon of Seattle; one brother, William V. Armstead of Spokane; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Cavell (Macdonald) Mahar Cheney

Visitation for Cavell (Macdonald) Mahar, 78, is scheduled from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Cheney. Graveside service will be Thursday at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Mrs. Mahar, who was born in Portland, died Wednesday.

She served in the Navy in Tillamook, Ore., and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, until 1946. She then worked for the civil service for Veterans Administration hospitals. With her job, she went to Korea, where she met her husband, Thomas Mahar. She was also stationed in Japan with the Veterans Administration.

She and her husband lived in San Francisco. They moved from Fort Lewis, Wash., to Spokane in 1961.

She received degrees in journalism and anthropology when she was 56.

Her husband died in 1989.

She is survived by two daughters, Theresa Mahar of Cheney and Alice Hawley of Valley, Wash.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

J.C. ‘Bud’ Wheelock Deer Park

No funeral service will be held for J.C. “Bud” Wheelock, 75, at his request. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangement.

Mr. Wheelock, who died Aug. 17, was born in Malheur, Ore.

He graduated from Springdale High School and served with the 1689th Combat Engineers in the Army during World War II.

He was a truck driver and worked as a tanker driver for P.I.E. before retiring.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1435.

Mr. Wheelock is survived by his wife, Myra Wheelock; a daughter, Trula Hedstrom; a brother, Donald Wheelock; a stepson, Steve Bartlett; two grandchildren, a stepgrandson and a great-grandson.

Herman Gilbertson Spokane

Memorial service for Herman Fredrick Gilbertson, 81, was Monday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Inurnment was at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Born in Kragnes, Minn., Mr. Gilbertson died Aug. 22.

He was a 40-year Spokane resident.

He served in the Army Air Force as a sergeant.

Mr. Gilbertson worked as a heavy equipment diesel mechanic and traveled throughout the Pacific Northwest. He worked on Grand Coulee Dam.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Gladys Gilbertson; two sons, Robert Dietzman of Seattle and Gary Dietzman of Spokane; a daughter, Margaret Caprye of Spokane; three sisters, Mabel Pinkerton, Ann Lechler and Mary Piper; 10 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.

Delma Lock Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Private service was held for Delma L. Lock, 87. Bonners Ferry Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Lock, who died last Saturday, was born in Kinsley, Kan.

She married Vernice Lock in 1925. They moved in 1947 to the Naples, Idaho, area, where they farmed until Mr. Lock’s death in 1989.

Survivors include three daughters, Verna Jacobson of Coeur d’Alene, Vera Kolegraf of Bremerton and Joan Butler of Spokane; two sons, Lester Lock of Pasco and Dee Lock of Otis Orchards; two brothers, Jack Bewley of Albuquerque, N.M., and Ben Bewley of Brush, Colo.; 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in Spokane or the Fry Foundation in Bonners Ferry.

Agnes Wissink Chewelah, Wash.

Rosary for Agnes Wissink, 87, is planned for 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary of The Rosary Catholic Church. Service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be at Chewelah Memorial Park. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah is in charge Of arrangements.

Mrs. Wissink, a lifetime Chewelah resident, died Thursday.

She married Frank Wissink in 1931.

She had worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital and was a member of St. Mary of the Rosary Parish.

She is survived by two sons, James “Bud” and Patrick Wissink, both of Chewelah; two daughters, Kathleen Chamberlain of Spokane and Marilyn Marshall of Chewelah; a brother, Raymond Vogt, and a sister, Margaret Vogt, both of Spokane; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Roy Jacobson Spokane

Service for Roy W. Jacobson, 78, will be at 2 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Jacobson died Tuesday near Keller Ferry, Wash., where he was camping.

He was born in Sprague, Wash., and had lived in Spokane for 74 years.

He worked as a molder in the metals industry.

Mr. Jacobson was a past president of the Inland Empire Rockhound Club.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lucille Jacobson; a daughter, Marlene Rantanen of Fallbrook, Calif.; four brothers, Merrill, Melvin, Gerald and Levi Jacobson; two sisters, Evelyn Thompson and Della Vonderfecht; and two grandsons.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Inland Empire Division.

Lucille (Salmon) Kenney Spokane

Memorial service for Lucille Dorothy (Salmon) Henderson Kenney, will be at 1 p.m. today at Fairmount Memorial Park. Bonney Watson Funeral Home in Seatac, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Kenney, 76, died Monday in Des Moines, Wash., where she had lived for the past three years.

Born in Spokane, Mrs. Kenney graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and Kinman Business University.

She was a member of the Hereafters Group.

Her husbands, Steven Henderson Sr. and Cecil Kenney, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a son, Steven Henderson Jr. of Spokane; a daughter, Sue Chaplik of Des Moines; three grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Sean Harkness Veradale

Memorial service for Sean P. Harkness, 18, will be at 1 p.m. today at Mountain View Bible Church in Post Falls. Hennessey Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Harkness died Thursday, from injuries suffered in an automobile collision Friday on state Highway 27.

He was born in Spokane.

He attended Central Valley High School and an alternative high school.

He was a member of the Harvest Christian Fellowship Youth Group.

He is survived by his father, John Harkness of Diamond Lake, Wash.; his mother, Diane Harkness of Veradale; a brother, Adam Harkness of Veradale; his girlfriend, Clare Pederson of Liberty Lake; and his grandparents, George and Elizabeth Cambridge of Veradale, and Jack and Dolores Harkness of Spokane.
