The Idaho women’s basketball team knocked off Loyola of Chicago 83-61 to finish third at the St. Mary’s tournament Saturday in Moraga, Calif.
Michelle Greenwood, who played at North Central High in Spokane, made 11 of 15 free throws and finished with a team-high 19 points for the Vandals (3-1). Kelli Johnson contributed 16 points and three steals.
Vandals starters Ari Skorpik, Alli Nieman and Kathryn Gussett were all whistled for their fourth fouls early in the second half, so coach Julie Holt had to go to her bench.
“A lot of people played well off the bench,” stated Holt. “In the second half, Jill Ortner and Sarah Blakley played great for us.”
Ortner, a senior from Kettle Falls, didn’t score but she gave the Vandals 15 minutes at point guard and had two assists, three rebounds and a steal. Blakley, a sophomore from Boise who had seen limited action, finished with five points.
Katy Winski topped Loyola with a game-high 20 points.
The Vandals shot just 39 percent (26 of 67) for the game, but they were 7 of 19 from 3-point range. Idaho had a 51-40 advantage on the boards.
Idaho returns home for the University Inn-Vandal tournament beginning on Friday. Kansas State opens the tourney with a 5 p.m. game against Texas-El Paso. Idaho takes on Eastern Michigan at 7.

The Hawks, who outrebounded the Cardinals 40-37, were led by the 17 points of Farrah Parsley. Teammate Jorja Cox finished with 11 points, but hit just 2 of 13 shots from the field.
