Couple Collected Dead Man’s Checks

A couple who lived with a retiree collected his pension checks for six months after he had died, keeping his body in the kitchen all the while, a newspaper reported Tuesday.

By the time 75-year-old Diamantino Rodrigues’ body was discovered in September, it “was so dry it looked embalmed,” the Lisbon daily Diario de Noticias reported.

The couple, both 30, must report to police every week while authorities consider whether to file charges. Medical examiners are trying to determine how the man died.

Police found Rodrigues’ body in his house in Alcanena, about 80 miles north of Lisbon, after his long absence made his family suspicious.
