Obituaries

Patricia Wolfe Tekoa, Wash.

A private family service for Patricia K. Wolfe, 50, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Kramer Funeral Home in Tekoa. Cremation will follow the service.

Mrs. Wolfe, who was born in Moscow, Idaho, died Wednesday.

She worked for the Good Samaritan Village in Moscow and as a nurses’ aid. She later moved to Grangeville, Idaho, and worked for the Good Samaritan Center there. In 1984 she moved to Worley, Idaho, and worked for the Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Fairfield as a van driver.

She was a member of the Tekoa Jaycees Club.

She is survived by her husband of 11 years, Leon; two sons, James O’Meara of Boise and Bill O’Meara of Spokane; three stepdaughters, Laurie Hokenson of Farmington, Wash., and Kathy Smith and Betty Jean Wicklund, both of Tekoa; two brothers, John McElroy of Pendleton, Ore., and Denny McElroy of Ketchikan, Alaska; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Tekoa Ambulance Fund or the Fairfield Good Samaritan Center.

Maxine Finch Spokane

Service for Maxine A. Finch, 80, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Spokane Valley Good Samaritan Nursing Home. Inurnment will be private. Hazen & Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Finch, who was born in Pelican Rapids, Minn., died Wednesday.

She was a graduate of Clarkston (Wash.) High School and later worked for various laundries. Mrs. Finch was a member of the Spokane Good Sports Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice.

Survivors include two sons, Howard Finch of Mead and Mike Finch of Spokane; two daughters, Dolores Plemons of Kent, Wash., and Alice Eastwood of Veradale; a brother, Bill Wares of Spokane; a sister, Lorraine VerStoppen of Spokane; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children or to The Spokesman-Review Christmas Fund.

Helen Setters Spokane

Service for Helen E. Setters, 90, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Endicott (Wash.) Congregational Church in Endicott. Burial will follow at the Endicott Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax, Wash., is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Setters, who was born in Ritzville, Wash., died Thursday.

She was a graduate of Ritzville High School and Cheney Normal School, where she earned her teaching degree.

Mrs. Setters was a teacher in Lamont, Wash., for two years. She later farmed at Ewan, Wash., for eight years and at Winona, Wash., until retiring in 1967. She moved to Spokane after retirement.

She was a member of the Endicott Congregational Church, Ewan Grange, Winona Grange and the Washington State Soil Conservation Auxiliary.

Her husband of 64 years, James, died in 1990.

She is survived by four daughters, Dorothy Hodgson of St. Maries, Sylvia Buchholtz of Renton, Wash., Barbara Talsma of Ronan, Mont., and Helen Jane Hughes of Endicott; 10 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Henry Lohstroh Spokane

Service for Henry F. Lohstroh, 84, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Born in Chesley, Ontario, Mr. Lohstroh died Wednesday.

He was a retired engineer for Burlington Northern Railroad. He was a member of the Concordia Masonic Lodge No. 249, Scottish Rite Bodies, El Katif Shrine, North Spokane Shrine Club-Hi-Ball Railroad Unit, and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.

His wife, Evelyn, died in January.

Survivors include a son, Larry Lohstroh of Spokane; a brother, Bill Lohstroh of Spokane; three granddaughters and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Scottish Rite Center for Childhood Language Disorders.

Jack Nicholls Kellogg

Memorial service for Jack E. Nicholls, 86, will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Silver Valley Church of the Nazarene in Kellogg. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Nicholls, who was born in Spokane, died Tuesday.

He moved to the Silver Valley in 1927 from Spokane and graduated from Kellogg High School in 1929.

Mr. Nicholls went on to work as a manager and salesman for the shoe department at Hutton’s Department Store, retiring in 1978 after 43 years.

He was a member and secretary of the Kellogg Elks Club and the Knights of Pythias. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows, the Ethics Committee of Shoshone Medical Center and the Kellogg Esther Rebekah Lodge.

Mr. Nicholls was an associate member of the Tillicum Rebekah Lodge in Plummer, Idaho, and an honorary member of the Silverwood Theme Park. He also was a swimming instructor in Kellogg.

Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Clara; four children, Geneva Greeves and Roberta Rodgers, both of Spokane, Carroll Keiss of Boise, and Robert Coe of Oklahoma; a brother, Bill Nicholls of Kingston, Idaho; a half-brother, Bob Dietrich of Spokane; a half-sister, Mary Lou of New Mexico; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Frances Thomas Spokane

Service for Frances E. Thomas, 80, will be at 10 a.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Interment to follow at Pines Cemetery.

Mrs. Thomas, who was born in Tekoa, Wash., died Wednesday.

She was a homemaker and a rancher. She was a member of the Appaloosa Horse Breeding Association.

Her husband of 38 years, Claude, died in 1971.

She is survived by her two daughters, June Garwood and Shirley Cameron, both of Newport, Wash.; two sons, Skippy Thomas of Medical Lake and Jerry Thomas of Linwood, Wash.; eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Laurel Carlen Spokane

Service for Laurel Lee Thomas Schofield Carlen, 57, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Gretna Green Chapel. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Carlen, who was a 40-year resident of Spokane, died Wednesday.

She was born in Everett and was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Dale; two daughters, Molly Gay and Lori Schofield; two sons, Michael and Darren Schofield; 11 sisters; two brothers and six grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation in memory of Lori Carlen.

Janice Provancha Moscow, Idaho

Viewing for Janice Stover Provancha, 50, will be held Sunday from noon until 9 p.m. at Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow. Service will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at the Moscow Church of the Nazarene. Burial will follow at the Moscow Cemetery.

Ms. Provancha, who was born in Spokane, died Friday from cancer.

She grew up and attended school in Spokane, graduating from West Valley High School. She went on to attend the Kelsey Baird Secretarial School in Spokane before moving to Moscow in 1964. She worked for Washington State University as a secretary in the psychology department.

Ms. Provancha worked for WSU until 1986, when she became the communications director at the Moscow Church of the Nazarene. She retired earlier this year.

She was an Avon distributor and a member of the Gideons International Auxiliary and had served as state president.

Survivors include three daughters, LaDawn Harold and Lori Abendroth, both of Moscow, and Kim Abendroth of Vancouver, Wash.; a sister, Beverly Dutton of Florida; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Moscow Church of the Nazarene for a special memorial project.

Fred Yuhl Spokane

No service is planned for Fred J. Yuhl. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of cremation.

Mr. Yuhl, 85, died Nov. 29.

He was born in Kent Township, N.D., and came to Spokane in 1937. He went to work for the railroad in 1942 as a mechanic and retired in 1965. He returned to Spokane 10 years ago.

He was a member of Orchard Heights Pentecostal Church and the Railroad Workers Union.

His wife, June, preceded him in death. Mr. Yuhl is survived by a brother, Andrew Yuhl of Bremerton.

Howard R. Haglund Spokane

A private family service was held for Howard R. Haglund, 76. Ball and Dodd-South Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Haglund, a 15-year resident of Spokane, died last Saturday. He was a member of the Mid-City Senior Center.

Mr. Haglund is survived by a brother, Harold Haglund of Columbia Heights, Minn.

Elaine Cozza Morris Spokane

Vigil Service for Elaine Cozza Morris, 65, will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Mass will be at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Morris, a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Wednesday.

She was a graduate of Rogers High School and was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Harold; a son, Ron Morris of Colbert; two daughters, Sandra Seep of Cheney and Kathy Lorentzen of Davenport, Wash.; her mother, Santa Cozza of Spokane; a brother, Frank Cozza of Spokane; a sister, Donna Burns of Davenport, Wash.; and five grandchildren.

Dorothy Blackburn Horne Tucson, Ariz.

Graveside service for Dorothy Blackburn Horne, 85, was held Friday. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Horne, who was born in Gilmer, Texas, died Nov. 26.

Survivors include two sons, Lewis Horne of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and Bill Horne of Mesa, Ariz.; two daughters, Nancy Peters of Holdenville, Okla. and Ann Cowle of Tucson; a sister, Mary Bridge of Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, Dan Blackburn of Mesa; 16 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

Russell Benedict Spokane

Service for Russell E. Benedict, 78, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. Inurnment will be private.

Mr. Benedict, who was born in Hardy, Mont., died Wednesday.

He graduated from high school in Cascade, Mont., and worked as a miner for the Anaconda Co. in Butte, Mont., and as a truck driver. He also owned and operated his own diesel repair shop, Northwest Diesel, in North Bend, Wash., and owned the Norwest Motel in North Bend.

Mr. Benedict moved to Spokane 16 years ago.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Minnie; two sons, Don Benedict of Henderson, Nev., and Boyd Benedict of Billings, Mont.; two daughters, Charlotte Huet of North Bend; and Kathleen McDaniel of Eufaula, Okla.; a half-brother, Ben Benedict of Great Falls, Mont.; three half-sisters, Felicia Erickson of Sand Coulee, Mont., Patricia Mason of Spokane and Unafaye Bowman of Kansas City, Mo.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be given to Hospice of Spokane.

Charles Schoenberg Spokane

Memorial service for Charles M. Schoenberg, 66, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Schoenberg, who was born in Benton Harbor, Mich., died Monday.

He served in the U.S. Navy and worked as an insurance agent for American Republic and Royal Neighbors.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Shonnie; five daughters, Marla Hilderbrand, Linda Bryd, Marcia Darrow, Lisa Magno and Elizabeth Reiker, and two sons, Eric and Mark Schoenberg, all of Spokane; one stepdaughter, Darleen Laford, and three stepsons, Dan, Dennis and Darren Ochs, all of Spokane; a sister, Mary Ann Pittaway; and numerous grandchildren and stepgrandchildren.
