Tenth Person Dies In E. Coli Outbreak
A 10th person has died from an outbreak of food poisoning in Scotland believed caused by meat infected with the E. coli bacteria.
The latest victim, an 87-year-old woman, died in a Glasgow hospital Sunday night, Scottish Secretary Michael Forsyth told Scottish lawmakers.
Health officials said Monday that 388 people now show signs of food poisoning; of these, E. coli has been confirmed in 207. More than 40 people have been hospitalized.
Officials say the poisonings stem from two gatherings last month - an 18th birthday party and a church supper for retirees.
They believe the poisoned meat in both cases came from a butcher shop in Wishaw, 12 miles southeast of Glasgow. The shop has been closed until health officials complete their investigation.
