Byu Fires Reid

Compiled From Wire Services

Roger Reid, who had six 20-win seasons in seven years as basketball coach at Brigham Young, was abruptly fired after a turbulent 1-6 start to his eighth season.

In a hastily called news conference, BYU athletics officials said Reid would “step down” as coach and remain at the university in another capacity. Assistant coach Tony Ingle was named interim head coach.

Reid, 49, whose 152-77 record gave him the best winning percentage in school history, made headlines Nov. 17 when highly recruited prep star Chris Burgess, a Mormon, opted for Duke. Burgess complained that when he told Reid of his decision, the BYU coach told him he had let down “9 million Mormons and the prophet and apostles” of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which owns BYU.

The University of Missouri has lost its appeal and must return almost $97,000 earned from the 1994 NCAA basketball tournament. The NCAA decision to penalize the school came because former basketball player Jevon Crudup accepted extra benefits from an agent.
