District To Spread Out Storm Make-Up Days

From Staff And Wire Reports

Spokane School District 81 hopes to ease the pain of making up three days missed during last month’s ice storm by spreading them over a semester.

The school board won’t make a final decision until Jan. 8. But district administrators are recommending as make-up days Jan. 27 during semester break, and June 13 at the end of the school year.

The third day would be made up during spring break, although a specific date hasn’t been set. Spring break is April 7-11.

“It’s going to be either Monday or Friday,” said Associate Superintendent Mark Anderson.

More snow could mean an even shorter spring vacation, Anderson warned. “If we have more snow days, our only choice will be to pick off more days during spring break.”

All of the make-up days can’t be tagged onto the end of the school year because seniors must go a minimum of 175 days before graduation, and commencement ceremonies begin the weekend of June 6.

The district doesn’t plan to apply for a waiver allowing it to overlook the missed days, Anderson said.

“The law doesn’t allow a waiver if you have the opportunity to make them up during breaks.” , DataTimes
