Squad Dismantles Found Wwii Explosive

From Staff And Wire Reports

An Air Force bomb squad Thursday dismantled a small, World War II-vintage explosive unearthed by a construction crew at Spokane International Airport, officials said.

Fairchild Air Force Base’s bomb-disposal unit was called in after the device was discovered by workers building an addition to a United Parcel Service cargo terminal, airport spokesman Todd Woodard said.

The bomb-disposal team detonated a small explosive next to the device to render it harmless, said Capt. Mark Brown, a Fairchild spokesman.

An inspection revealed the device was a 3.2-inch diameter M-6 heat rocket, Brown said. The explosive was rusted and had apparently been at the site for several years.

Officials did not know how the device ended up at the location, Brown said.

The Army used M-6 rockets in World War II and the Korean War, Brown said. He was unsure what their purpose was. , DataTimes
