Task Force Expands Probe To Include Clinton Legal Defense Fund

Newsday

A Justice Department task force probing allegations of Democratic campaign financing improprieties has expanded its investigation to include President Clinton’s legal defense fund.

Department prosecutors Thursday subpoenaed records of the fund, which was established in 1994 to help defray legal expenses of Clinton and first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, the fund’s executive director, Michael Cardozo, said. , The White House has also received a subpoena for records pertaining to the defense fund as well as campaign-finance records and is “in the process of responding” to it, said one White House official, who asked not to be identified.

Cardozo declined to discuss its scope, but said he believed the decision to subpeona the records was triggered by the fund’s revelation Monday that it had rejected nearly $640,000 in donations because of doubts about the source of the money.
