CV Holds On To Down Titans

GSL/FL boys

Poor free-throw shooting doomed the University Titans from the start of their 62-55 Greater Spokane League basketball loss to rival Central Valley on Saturday.

The Bears (2-1, 3-4) won with a strong second-half effort, but it was the early going that came back to haunt the Titans.

“If we make a decent percentage of our free throws in the first half and third quarter it’s a whole different ballgame,” said Titans coach Jay Humphrey. “We’re very likely ahead and they’re the ones pressing.”

The Bears led 26-25 at intermission simply because U-Hi missed 7 of 11 from the foul line.

The third quarter was more of the same, as U-Hi made just one more free throw.

“I point to that as the difference in the game,” said Humphrey. “Maybe it’s simplistic but that’s it.”

Central Valley picked up the tempo to lead by as many as eight points. The fourth quarter was a free-throw shooting contest and the Bears kept the upper hand by making 14 of 18 to U-Hi’s 12 of 14.

“It was a typical CV-U-Hi game,” said Bears coach Rick Sloan. “It was pretty rough, pretty emotional, pretty physical.”

In all, 49 personals were called and five players fouled out. The Bears finished 27 for 37 at the line; University was 17 for 27.

The lead changed hands or was tied in the first half 13 times. At no time in the opening two quarters did either team lead by more than three points.

Central Valley bolted to a 36-29 lead in the first 3 minutes after the break, on a brilliant back cut for a basket and free throw by Todd Millar. His 3-point basket later broke a 39-all tie.

“Todd had a great game,” said Sloan.

University (1-1, 3-2) kept things close until midway through the fourth quarter when Ben Platt scored twice to up CV’s lead to 53-45.

The Bears had five players at or near double figures, including Millar’s team-high 12 points. Raif Jochim came off the bench to snag 10 rebounds.

“I think people thought if they stop (Ryan) Smith they stop us,” said Sloan. “Not now. We’re playing good team basketball.”

Three players did most of the scoring for University, led by post player Erik Carlson’s 20. Jeff Price added 16 points and Nick Earling had 12.
