Joe Santorsola Spokane

Vigil service for Joe Santorsola, 95, will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is planned for 11 a.m. Friday at Mary Queen Catholic Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Santorsola, who was born in Italy, died Sunday.

He had lived in Spokane since 1928 and was a railroad worker for 50 years.

His wife, Helen Santorsola, died in 1992.

He is survived by a son, James Santorsola of Spokane; two daughters, Mary Ann Sells and Kathy Heffernan, both of Spokane; a brother, Tony Santorsola of Italy; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Morning Star Boys Ranch.

Jackie (Gutterud) Baun Sun City, Ariz.

Memorial service for Jacquelynn “Jackie” (Gutterud) Orr Baun will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Valley Fourth Memorial Church in Spokane. Best Funeral Home in Peoria, Ariz., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gutterud, a former longtime Spokane Valley resident, died Saturday. She was 55.

She was born in Maddock, N.D.

She worked for the Central Valley School District for many years and had also been a house parent at Hutton Settlement.

She and her husband, Clifton Baun, retired to Sun City in 1991.

She is survived by her husband; her father and stepmother, Lloyd “Bunka” and Midge Gutterud of South Carolina; a son, Allan Orr of Spokane; a daughter, Cheryl Everard of Veradale; a stepdaughter, Linda Carlson of Benton City, Wash.; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hutton Settlement.

Hugo Renz Greenacres

Visitation for Hugo O. Renz, 88, is scheduled from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hope Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Pines Cemetery.

Mr. Renz, who was born in Quincy, Wash., died Sunday.

He was a retired carpenter and was a member of Carpenters Union Local 98.

He served in the Army Air Corps in 1928, and during World War II he worked as a welder.

Mr. Renz returned to Spokane in 1946.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Luceille Renz; three sons, Ramon and Victor Renz, both of Federal Way, Wash., and Fred Renz of Richland; two brothers, Al and Victor Renz, both of Veradale; three sisters, Hilda Tupper, Trudy Forry and Mary Morris, all of Millwood; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hope Lutheran Church.

Delbert Brunner Spokane

A memorial gathering for Delbert E. “Del” Brunner, 74, is planned for 2 p.m. Friday at Casey’s Restaurant. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Brunner died Monday.

He was born in Farmington, Wash., and had lived in Spokane for 48 years.

He graduated from high school in Farmington.

He was a World War II Army veteran and served as a medic in Germany and France. Following the war, he worked as a mechanic for Buchanan Chevrolet.

He was recalled to the Army for the Korean War and again served as a medic.

Following the Korean War he tended bar in Spokane and then worked as a medical technician at the Veterans Administration Hospital for 25 years. He retired in the 1970s.

Mr. Brunner was a member of the Spokane Chapter of Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 51 and Spokane Eagles Lodge 2.

Survivors Include his wife of 47 years, Rosie Brunner; two daughters, Carol Simpkins of Richland and Sharon Brunner of Portland; a son, Michael Brunner of Seattle; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Alvin Swift Richland

Service for Alvin C. Swift, 94, is set for 11 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Colfax, Wash. Burial will be at the Colfax Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Swift, who was born in Thera, Wash., died Saturday.

He graduated from Colfax High School and attended Washington State College for two years.

He worked laying telephone wire over the Rocky Mountains.

In 1930, he returned to the Thera area, in Whitman County, and began farming. He retired in 1964.

Mr. Swift moved to Richland in 1994 to be near a daughter.

He married Gladys Gillespie in Brewster, Wash., in 1930. She died in 1975.

Mr. Swift was a member of Hiram Lodge, the El Katif Shrine, the Colfax Elks Lodge, the Endicott Wheat Growers, the Whitman County Shrine Club and Scooter Patrol and the board of directors of Colfax Grange Supply. He was a founding member of the Rebel Flat Grange in Diamond, Wash.

Survivors include two daughters, Marjory Ray of State Road, N.C., and Esther Anderson of Richland; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children or the Colfax Methodist Church Building Fund.

June Knight Yakima

No service will be held for June Knight. Shaw and Sons Funeral Directors in Yakima is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Knight, who died Friday, was born in Dallas. She was 76.

She had lived in Oklahoma City and Los Angeles, where she worked for Southern California Edison and retired in 1976.

She and her husband, Melvin, moved to Spokane in 1976 and stayed until 1990. Then they moved to Desert Air, Wash., for two years before moving to Yakima.

Mrs. Knight was a member and past royal matron of Amaranth Trinity Chapter 51, a past matron of Order of the Eastern Star Spokane Chapter 163, and a member of the Inland Empire Past Matrons and Past Patrons Association, El Karnak Temple and the Daughters of the Nile.

Survivors include her husband, Melvin Knight Sr.; two sons, Melvin Knight Jr. of Seattle and Robert Knight of Sacramento, Calif.; a daughter, Sylvia Lowery of Selah, Wash.; four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Douglas Sebold Coeur d’Alene

At the family’s request, no service will be held for Douglas D. Sebold, 56. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sebold, who was born in Nebraska, died Dec. 11. He had worked as an assistant professor and program director of athletic training education at Washington State University from 1978-87.

He moved to the Coeur d’Alene area in 1990.

Survivors include two sons, Rod Sebold of Spokane and Ron Sebold of California; two brothers, Lewis Sebold and Gillis Sebold; and five sisters, Rene Backus, Arlene Louthan, Dorothy Musil, Beverly Brangardt and Cynthia Knowles.

Anna Porter Spokane

Private service and burial will be held for Anna Oneta Porter, 95. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Porter, a homemaker, died Monday.

She was born in Lone Oak, Texas, and moved to Spokane in 1948 from Grand Prairie, Texas.

She was a member of Berean Bible Church.

Her husband, Raymond Porter, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two grandchildren, Linda Boynton and Daniel Steinke; and three great-grandchildren.

Norman Gunning Spokane Graveside service for Norman H. Gunning, 75, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Fairmount Memorial Park. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gunning died Friday. He was born in Alberta.

He came to the United States when he was 4.

He grew up near Davenport, Wash., and worked in several tire shops and operated a farm. He retired in 1975 and pursued his interests in hunting and firearms.

He was a member of Teamsters Union Local 690, the National Rifle Association, the Washington State Rifle and Pistol Association, the Spokane Rifle Club, the Spokane Gun Club, the Inland Northwest Wildlife Council and the Washington State Hunter Education Instructors Association.

His wife, Hazel Gunning, died in 1980.

He is survived by a son, Gary Gunning of Spokane, and a brother, Jack Gunning of Davenport.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Margaret Ross Chewelah, Wash.

Service for Margaret A. Ross, 89, is planned for 2 p.m. Friday at St. Mary of the Rosary Catholic Church in Chewelah. Burial will be at Chewelah Memorial Park. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ross, who was born in Govan, Wash., died Monday.

She taught in Wilbur and Kettle Falls, Wash., and the Chewelah Creek area for six years.

In 1935 she married Frank Ross.

They farmed from 1935 until 1965 in the Chewelah area. He died in 1970.

Mrs. Ross was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Altar Society and the Chewelah Creek Women’s Club.

She was involved with getting mail routes into the city limits of Chewelah and with Chewelah senior citizens’ entertainment.

She is survived by a daughter, Glenice Britschgi of Chewelah; a sister, Noreen Phillips of Spokane; a brother, Pat Quirk of Odessa, Wash.; a sister, Bertha Ryker of Spokane; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Virginia Farr Albion, Wash.

Service for Virginia Farr, 67, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax, Wash. Burial will follow at the Colfax Cemetery.

Mrs. Farr, a longtime Albion resident, died Sunday at Whitman Convalescent Center in Colfax.

She was born in McGrath, Alberta.

She and her family moved to the Colfax area when she was 6.

In 1951 she married Cecil “Dutch” Farr in Colfax. They moved just outside Albion in 1955.

Mrs. Farr, a homemaker, was a member of the Pine Grove Grange, Albion Historical Society and the Albion Women’s Club.

Her husband, Dutch, died in 1992.

Mrs. Farr is survived by three sons, Jim Farr of Palouse, Wash., Larry Farr of Colfax and Randy Farr of Albion; her mother, Ruth Helm of Colfax; three sisters, Janice Schweiger of Kennewick, Loraine Smick of Endicott, Wash., and Dolly Witruk of Spokane; and 10 grandchildren.
