Atf Widens Probe Into Mail Bombing

Compiled From Wire Services

The investigation into a Christmas Eve package bombing that injured a 10-year-old girl widened on Thursday, stretching into three other states.

Remains of the bomb have been sent to the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms laboratory in Rockville, Md. Already, the analysis has turned up some evidence, said police Capt. William Sickinger, who declined to elaborate.

A quiet Christmas Eve that began with a visit to relatives quickly turned violent when little Jordan Reardon opened a parcel in her family’s dining room and set off a bomb.

The family had just returned home when Jordan jumped from the car, grabbed the plain-wrapped package out of the mailbox addressed to “Mr. Reardon and family,” and sped into the house in Clifton Park, about 15 miles north of Albany.

Jordan suffered first and second-degree burns and cuts to her face, arms and upper extremities, hospital officials said. She was in good condition in the burn unit of Westchester Medical Center.
