Baseball Committee Approves Mcclatchy’s Buying Of Pirates

Compiled From Wire Services

Major league baseball’s eight-member ownership committee voted Wednesday to approve the purchase of the Pittsburgh Pirates by a group led by California businessman Kevin McClatchy.

The vote came one day before the deadline the team’s current owners had imposed for McClatchy, who has exclusive bargaining rights, to complete the purchase believed to be worth $90 million.

Baseball’s final vote could happen within the next two weeks. Ten of 14 National League owners and eight of 14 American League owners would have to approve the purchase.
