Democrats Refile Gingrich Charges

Compiled From Wire Services

House Democrats on Wednesday refiled charges against House Speaker Newt Gingrich accusing him of violating House gift rules, improper use of tax-exempt foundations, and bribery.

The complaint is an expanded version of one filed last month. The House ethics committee last week rejected that version for procedural violations, and the refiling had been expected.

The committee took no formal action on the new complaint Wednesday. It is scheduled to meet again today.

The most serious charges in the new complaint accuse the speaker of doing special favors for wealthy donors to GOPAC, his former political action committee.
